On Tuesday I am having a dryer arrive. The delivery people will take out the old dryer and replace and install the new dryer. Would you tip the delivery people. If so, how much.? Thank you.

I never tipped when my stuff was delivered. Included in the I price I already paid is how I figure it.

if it is a very simple delivery without stairs, removal of old one, a connection (like washer), etc. then maybe $10 each.

But my delivery would be to my basement and removal, with the connection I would probably tip $20 each.

Not knowing where you bought it from but here there is a delivery charge, there is a removal fee and there is a charge to have the new appliance installed.

So no, I wouldn't be tipping them.

I usually tip anyone carrying in something heavy like furniture or installing an appliance in my house. For what you describe, I'd tip $10 each person.

I don't believe these guys get anything much out of the delivery charge. That charge benefits whoever sells the items to cover their costs to have it delivered. the guys who drive the truck and move the big things (like washers and dryers) in and out of the house and safely install it usually get hourly wages and any tip they pick up really makes a difference.

In the amount of years the dryer will likely be in place working for you that $20--$10 each--for two men will hardly be felt or remembered. But it will be gratefully received by them and their families right now.

It would depend on the circumstances but generally I would not tip for a delivery of that kind.

We tip most delivery and service people.

Even though a delivery fee is included in the price, it goes to the store.

They are very appreciative.

Why tip? This is their job, take one out and leave the new one - no matter what the appliance is or piece of furniture. This thought doesn't even cross my mind ever. These people get paid to do this work, if the deal wasn't to remove the old piece, why would they offer this service? You don't think they're already getting paid to do this? I do - no monetary tipping here.

My BEST tip - please do not bump, scrape, scratch my 100+year old oak woodwork, here in my house or anywhere. This is my tip!

I agree with your comments about stairs, removal of old, hookup of new..

I tip 20.00 per person. In the last year, I've had a new refrigerator ( no stairs, in garage), a new washer ( down cellar stairs, removal of old, I emptied the old and hooked up the new one).

I had a new water heater ( down stairs, removal of old up the stairs). but did NOT tip that plumber because he was the owner of the business. He came out on a Saturday morning and called thier on call service person who installed the new one in one hour. I had asked him if they would install a water heater if I went to Lowes, bought one, had it delivered in three days ( whcih meant no hot water for three days).

He was there in ONE HOUR, no waiting, no rigamarole.

I drained the old one with my own hose while I waited for him to come over.

I reason that I don't have a $60,000 truck ( and payments!!) to haul big stuff home, can't get heavy stuff OFF a truck, don't have a hand truck to drag it to it's place of installaition, my ( or my friend's my age -late sixties) don't strain their backs and knees) they did a neat professional job, and I feel better having tipped them.

I discovered I like to write a check or tip. The days of DYI are OVER for things like appliance moving and heavy stuff. I saved a TON over the years doing it myself!!! So I pay it forward now!!!

I feel it's included in the price so I include the tip in my calculation of cost.

Another way I look at it....a fridge or water heater or washer usually lasts 15 years minimum. For two guys that 40.00 works out to 2.60 a year, or 1.33 EACH!!

They get lunch or a case of beer out of it ( for after work).

I agree the drivers do not get the delivery charge. The store gets that. The store pays for the fuel, maintenance and lease payments on that box truck. MOST of those guys get a wage, which until recently wasn't much.

The removal charge goes to the store....they manage the dumping of the old unit, and they pay any fees to do so.

I always remember that the OLD thing has to go too..and I'm sure not going to load and drag an old dripping water tank or washer or 300 pound fridge to dump somewhere in the family wagon....!!!!!!!

Another thing...They are working folks and I would MUCH rather tip someone who is WORKING that a lot of people who do NOT work who I am paying for indirectly. Just my personal philosophy.

A few years ago a friend of mine and I had to get a non-running 700 pound motorcycle onto a small tilt bed trailer. We are both in our sixties. My neighbor had two strong guys helping HIM with a project. We asked them to help push it onto the trailer...about 30 seconds of work. They came over and did it no problem. I tipped them each 10.00. ...twenty bucks..about one session at the chiropractor if WE had struggled with it!!!!

I guess I say I approve of tipping!!!

I just had a new washer, dryer and refrigerator delivered. No tip. I figure I paid enough already plus delivery charge and the delivery guys are already making at least $20 an hour if not more. That is their job. No one ever tipped me while I was doing my job. Tipping is getting out of control.

Yes I always tip those that deliver and install my appliances in the $10 - $20 range. They usually deliver, install, demonstrate, remove old appliance and remove packing materials. Delivery fees go to the store not the guys that actually do the work.

I figure if I can afford to buy a new appliance I can afford to tip the guys that make it work for me.

I'll never forget the time we were having a TV delivered by UPS. This was a 48" unit and delivery was to be threshold, which means only to the door. The driver asked where we wanted it and was told to just leave it at the front of the doorway. He said that's a strange place to put a TV, and asked again where we were going to use it. We told him up "those" steps. He then brought the TV up 15 steps and was insistant about not taking a tip. Said it was something he could not accept. My husband was more insistant that he take the $20 tip. Reluctantly, he did. Never had a delivery person like that ever again. He definitely was one in a million.

Of course if you don't want to tip, you could always just reach into your gift closet and find a little something...

I had two large bags of stuff out for my garbage man....I tried to give him one of the 65" flat screens from my gift closet ( that I keep there "just in case" someone comes over and I have to give them a gift...)

But he said no.

In fact, he looked at me like I was crazy and quickly jumped back into his truck and sped off, my garbage flying out all over the road....

ANother time I tried to give someone some cabin socks, but they said they didn't wear them.

I let them pick something.

They selected the 400 dollar Margarita Maker ( I had bought TWO when they were on special sale at QVC....I kept one, put the other in ...you guessed it...the gift closet!!!

So don't laugh when they say buy TWO of something ( one for the gift closet).....you never know when an overpriced Bose radio or a 500 dollar Dyson hair dryer will come in handy!!!

@PINKdogWOOD Tipping is voluntary. Anyone who is tipped is already getting paid for doing a job, so I assume you never tip anyone.

Of course I tip, I tip high too.

For this type of work/job however I do not AND this is my choice.

No, that is their job. I never got tipped for any of my jobs except waiting on tables. I do tip, if someone goes beyond what they are being paid.

If you feel guilty or want to do it, go ahead. It's up to each person and their beliefs.

It depends--on how efficient, professional, pleasant they are. I wouldn't automatically tip anyone. Depends on the service received.

I'm assuming these delivery people are getting paid a decent salary.
