Ulta Kate Spade email

Wasn't sure which forum was appropriate for this, since Kate's business incorporated beauty, jewelry, fashion, accessories, and more. So community seems the best place.

This morning, Ulta sent out an email titled "come hang with Kate Spade". For those who aren't aware, she ended her life by hanging herself.

Ulta sent out an apology email this afternoon. I don't think I've ever seen such an inappropriate email from any business, ever!

I didn't read the email you are referring to because I have nothing I need to purchase so I just deleted it but I just got and read the email from Ulta apologizing to their customers and Kate Spade's family. I was not aware of how she died. Very poor choice of words from whoever wrote the email !

Very inappropriate. The thing is, I would think that an email/advertisement would have to be reviewed by a team & nobody noticed?

ETA - What did they mean by "come hang with KS" anyhow? Not like she was going to be doing a live social media thing ya know? I get emails from H&M to come hang when some designer or influencer is going to be live on social media, etc.

If I had gotten that email, I doubt I would have remembered how Spade chose to die.

I received both e-mails and did not remember how Kate Spade died and wondered why they were apologizing.

The morning email was about Kate Spade fragrances. I don't know why they would choose the words "come hang" with a person who everyone in the business should know, has passed away. The fact that she passed away by taking her life in this manner....worst choice of words, ever.

I agree...I got the email and the subsequent apology and although I didn't even notice the phrasing in the first email, when it was pointed out in the apology email, it DID seem very awkward. To "hang out" DOES imply Kate Spade was making a personal appearance.
I give Ulta a lot of credit for the apology...they also cited May being Mental Health Awareness Month, and the whole thing is made even more tragic by the statement from Ashley and Wynonna Judd that their mother Naomi died of "mental illness."

Good God that is horrible. I would have definitely remembered her death, it was tragic.

Who on earth wasn't thinking in that company?

Such insensitivity and stupidity. She was a Mom too, so close to Mother's Day.

it was kind of them to acknowledge and apologize. it honestly did not even click with me that it was "inappropriate."

the original email obviously did not mean the person, but to hang out with the fragrance. it was a poor choice of words probably, but kate spade had not owned that company since 2006.

Who "hangs out" with a fragrance? It was such awkward and unusual wording.
That said, who remembers what method of suicide a person used? I would say 99 percent of Ulta buyers don't, so maybe it was her family or her estate that complained.

I'm not just an Ulta buyer, but have purchased many Kate Spade products over the years. There was a store in my town. My daughter and I shopped there often. We always enjoyed looking at her designs. Didn't buy every visit, but we often did.

I haven't forgotten how she died. I can't even begin to think how hurtful that email was to her family, friends, and former business associates.

@september I too received the Ulta ad but my brain must have been on vacation when I read it. For whatever reason, this did not register with me when I initially read this. Not until they issued the apology did I reflect on the manner of her death. It is good that they stepped up and acknowledged the poor choice of words for this perfume ad.

I got the email this morning, I knew Kate Spade committed suicide but didn't remember how. It's ridiculous to say come hang with Kate, she's deceased, was she going to be there as a hologram?!

Nice of them to acknowledge and apologize? Yeah, I guess. I don't really think they had a choice though. I got the "hang with KS" email about 7pm yesterday and the apology email about 3pm today. By that time, it appeared to be all over the internet (fans are upset with ulta, etc.).

I received that email as well. I never opened it, but I did read the heading.

I thought it was incredibly inappropriate. However, I didn't think of how she died when I read it (I had forgotten that part). I thought it was inappropriate because it said to "come hang" with Kate Spade as if she were still alive and it implied that people could be hanging out with her. I thought it was ridiculous to imply something like that since she had passed away.

The real story behind that title is actually shocking. What a horrible mistake for such a large company to make. Yikes.

KoKtoo I wondered the same thing. I mean how many hands and approvals go through an ad before it's publicized? Hard to believe that not one person noticed? No way.
