People Asking Personal Questions

This morning DD said, "I forgot to tell you that Peggy (the town's worst busybody) ambushed me at the post office yesterday. She asked how you were and asked if you had "found someone and were dating yet."

I laughed and asked what she told the old nosebag. One day she asked if I felt ok. When told yes, I was fine she said I looked pale and should really use blush.

DD said, "Well, Peggy, I don't poke my nose in other people's business and that includes my Mother" and I walked away. She is a pill. One would think her husband, adlut kids and the gaggle of grandkids that are always with her would keep her occupied.

Some folks sould use a glue stick and not Chapstick.

@CrazyKittyLvr2 Just smile and walk away. Or ask her "Why do you want to know?"

No matter how you answer, the town gossip will make her rounds, and will include you.

Do what is comfortable. I wouldn't call her a nosebag or a pill, though.

Really-how important is this? Handle it without rancor and snark. There are better ways to deal with a person who asks personal questions.

She may not mean anything by them, either. She is who she is.

(Haven't we all asked how somebody is? Haven't we all asked a follow-up question?)

@CrazyKittyLvr2 My dad had a great stock question for snoops like this. He would look them straight in the eye and ask "are you writing a book?" LOL I 've seen him do it a few times.

The rude, super snoops would be so shocked and remained with their jaws dropped. No further questions were asked. Sometimes, you just have to embarrass them. Usually works.

It might help to know the advice a close friend gave me. "If they are talking about me, they are talking about my favorite subject." She repeated that more than once throughout the years.

I call people like this a nose box . I don't care for their questions, because it puts you on the spot, but nose boxes will not be stopped. 🤷‍♀️

I had a nosy coworker constantly asking me personal questions. I finally put an end to her questions by telling her that she will be the first to know if there are any

changes in my life. That response finally shut her up.

My response to questions I chose not to answer is simple: I look directly at them and do not respond. Sometimes they will repeat the question but my response is always the same and I don't walk away..........they become uncomfortable and walk away. Works every time. Just because you are asked a question doesn't mean you need to respond.

I just don't tolerate nosy people, regardless of whether they try do it under the guise of 'concern' or 'being nice'.

If it's not someone that I choose to deal with or respond to, I don't, I act like I didn't hear them say anything and keep on doing what I'm doing.

She has been that way for decades. Sadly, she lives on the same street as the PO and if she sees someone going in or coming out she is apt to appear. It has become a game. Dodge Peggy while getting the mail.

When she said I need blush I just chuckled and went to my car.

I just cannot imagine asking anyone personal questions.

I told DD if not for the fact Peg would spread it all over she should have said yeah, Mom found a hunky 35 yr. old on the internet.

I live in a neighborhood like that. 3-4 women in neighborhood houses gossip like crazy....when they aren't going to church or quoting the Bible.

Two of them were in the backyard talking last week and my BF asked me if I was going out to join "the old biddies" Just no. LOL

I think your daughter handled it very well. People like Peggy will blab everything they hear to anyone who will listen. They are simply rude and shallow people.

I had a friend that would take that one further..."because if you are, you can kiss my ar$e and call it a love story."

My Dad also said, "Are you writing a book." Then he went on to say, "Well you'll have to leave this part out".

I've hear my daughter say this to her 6 year old when she asks too many questions when adults are talking. I love it. She remembers her granddad.

Yeah, I don't do well with nosy. Some people just seem to be wired like that and I don't even think they realize they are being intrusive.

Then, there are some who are just plain nosy. I tend to gravitate away from that in warp speed.

My Mom used to have a good line about people gossiping about her. She'd laugh and say when they're talking about me they are giving someone else a rest. She never took it very seriously. Unless they are trying to ruin a reputation or spread a vicious lie it's best to just ignore.

Lacy has a cute trick for the nosy ones! She took sign language and she tilts her head to the side and signs 'Why do you ask?', with a puzzled look.

They look back at her like a deer in headlights, having no idea what she signed (said) and they just walk away.

Sure enough, Gladys Kravitz and her nosy friends spread it around the neighborhood that she's deaf and no one even bothers her anymore, LOL!

It's hysterical to watch!

As to ASL, I started learning it like a million decades ago and wish I had kept up because I really would like to go back.

We have a Gladys Kravitz on my little street. It's a guy but, man, does he ever earn the name!

No need to answer any question about "how you are".

Just respond with a simple turnaround of the question by asking "how are YOU??????"
