Legislative Bonus

I just wonder if other states are doing something like this? Our state legislature met this week and voted to give every person who filed a state tax return last year, a rebate of $500 ($1,000 a couple) to cover increases in gas and other things. Low income families that didn't file returns can apply for the rebate.

New Mexico is the second largest producer of oil and gas (after Texas) and with the increase in oil prices, we seem to be flush with cash which is quite a contrast from the usual.

I believe Calif is doing this too. I am in NV i have not heard we are doing it. I paid 4.95 for gas yesterday. Fortunately I do not have to drive much

I haven't heard anything about it in Ohio.

As an aside, the IRS needs to increase the mileage rate. 58.5 isn't cutting it with gas prices where they are now.

@Kachina624 I live NEXT DOOR....and just paid $5.80 for gas??? (It's even higher here than California). Such is life. di

In my area of Arizona , the price is $4.69. And $4.35 at Sam's or Costco.

Not as far as I know. I live in Va. I did get a small"break" in my town on my real estate taxes.

I have to sign my taxes and send them back to the accountants.

I've given my 2 daughters a lot of money this year. The government only cares that I pulled it out of my investments.

It makes me sick when I think of how many times each one of those dollar bills get taxed.

Just because a person works hard, saves their money, doesn't buy stupid stuff, if they have a little money saved up and they can get it...they will. Ugh!

The only money I got back was something like $20 from my utilities company. That money was for some kind of credit but I have no idea what kind of 'credit'. It was just a one-time thing which all of their customers received.

@Desertdi Yesterday I noticed gas for prices ranging from $3.95 to $4.09 here. I paid $4.19 during my semi-annual fill up a couple weeks ago. Naturally, i picked the high point. I don't do much driving, just short errands.

I thought I heard some states were lowering or eliminating the state gas tax.

Chicago was talking about a $500 gas card but since, thankfully, I don't have a car I haven't paid attention.

A few States will be giving a gas bonus but it won't be the same amount. I think I read where Georgia said they had a surplus so would prefer to do that. There are so many other things that could be done with that surplus here.

Indiana will refund money to taxpayers after the April 18 deadline. The state had a surplus and they expect processing to start May 1. We owed money to the state, so it would be nice to get it back.

Right now our state seems to be keeping our surplus, just like they do every year. The governor said that they're going to think about some ways perhaps they could give some back to the citizens.

Gas in my town is $3.41 gal.

Hi Kachina624, good for you! I'm in New Jersey and I went for gas yesterday and it was 4.09 for regular.Our Governor is speaking on Monday at 6pm, maybe he will be generous too!

@meallen616 Maybe what we've done will catch on. There are many other states raking in lots of oil money. Of course there's no telling how long high oil prices or this bounty will continue, which is probably why the IRS hasn't adjusted the mileage allowance.
