REMEMBER THESE?

"French Knitting" is what we called 4 nails on a large spool. Later my dad bought a "Knitting Nancy Kit". So fancy. LOL

I have a kit with a Princess spool and just started "knitting" with it this afternoon. Needed something to take my mind off of some things.

Amazingly I still remembered how to do this.

What fun, @Cakers3 ! I remember that, we might have done it in Vacation Bible School, or a girl's club, can't quite remember. Those pictures you show are so tantalizing and colorful, like warm childhood memories of corner-store candy...

I'm going to have to look up more on it. Thanks for the memory. I hope it brings you lots of joy, and just the distraction you desire at this time.

@Oznell I bought the Princess spool to teach my granddaughter but with all that has gone on there hasn't been time, sadly.

I wanted to make the bracelets with a little charm at the end with her. Maybe this summer.

You mentioned corner-store candy. I remember walking to school with my sisters and we would stop at a "penny" candy store every day on the way home. I can still remember the scent in that store and the owner, a kindly old gentleman.

Some people do this with just their fingers, too. A slip knot on the thumb and the four fingers are the pegs.

@ECBG OHMYGOSH! Can't begin to count how many of those I made as a kid! For my Mom, the cabin, the church bazaar, for my aunts and grandmother! Endless hours of looping! LOL!

They were the beginning of all the crafts I did then went on to teaching Interior Design!

The spool thing looks familiar. My mother must have had one. She also made a lot of things with the plastic canvas. I remember making the pot holders and I made a latch hook rug.

So what do you do with the "rope" from the spool?

@Cakers3, we had a candy store near school too. Love that nostalgic candy-- little round "dots" on paper, licorice "pipes" (?), jujubes, taffy, et al.

@VanSleepy, I think you could do things with the rope, like wind it around, over and over, and sew together to make hats, or place mats and other things. All I can remember is making the 'rope' longer and longer, without any clear 'end game' in mind, ha.

I have never seen the items the OP showed. My Mom, Grandmother, and Great-Grandmother were avid knitters and crocheted afghans one right after the other. I still have three my Grandmother gave me decades ago. I tried to knit and crochet but did not have more than a few chains created then would stop. But still have the memories of my Great-Grandmother trying her best to teach me.

But I could do and did do the pot holders all the time. Loved doing that.

I remember Woolworths would sell bags of mult-colored loops - all for the whopping price of 25 cents.

Always had the metal loom, too.

@VanSleepy There are crafts you can make with the "rope".

You can make friendship bracelets-tie the two ends together with a charm.

The rope is so easy to twist and form into shapes-such as flowers-add a barette on the back.

Some people use paracord.

Also you can use 3 pegs or even 6 depending upon what you want to make. Some people use heavier yarn to make placemats and some actually make area rugs.

There are endless possibilities.

Pinterest has many pictures of what people have done with the rope.

It really is a child's craft but some adults (*raises hand*) still enjoy.
