@eadu4 wrote:
Cute idea but if you use your lawn (like have pets, kids etc) it's not practical. I can't take a chance on the fleas and ticks and other bugs that flourish in a tall grass environment. It's not an "excuse" it's a fact. I have a cousin with lyme disease it's no fun. I don't want my grandkids picking up ticks and don't need my dog to bring in fleas and ticks. I'm all for helping bumble bees. I'd say plant the flowers they like. But if you have pets or kids that play in your yard it's not the best idea. Just a couple of fleas can lead to a big issue in a short time. And ticks bring their own set of issues never mind they're just yuck. You let a yard grow over and you will need the pest control people which defeats your purpose of helping the bumble bees. Better to plant some of their favorite flowers somewhere for them. Not to mention the number of passes it would take to mow it after a month, including a new blade most likely.

@eadu4 , yes, best to discourage ticks if possible. They can be quite tiny and difficult to see even with close inspection. And while many folks can fight Lyme, lots of other people struggle with awful symptoms. It can be a nightmare.

Sadly, I know all about how one or two fleas that hitchhike inside on dogs who are treated for such things can set up housekeeping on the inside cat who is not treated! haha! I can chuckle about it now but at the time, trust me when I say, it was NOT funny at all. Before I knew what was happening, it was total infestation! (Cat gets treated now along with the dogs.)

Im all for supporting the bees, their pollination is critical to eco system....The best thing is planting flowers in gardens or even in containers....

But another thing, dont drink Almond milk, many bees are killed in the process of harvesting the almonds...

🦒

From theguardian.com July 2020

Almond production requires bees for pollination. But pesticide exposure and other factors can cause many to die in the process. Almond milk may be a healthy alternative for us, but there are growing concerns about its impact on bees and the environment

At the rate my lawn care guy tends to show up, I might wind up participating by default. He is not overly reliable.

But I expect the lawn to be mowed every other week in the mild spring and do not want the grass to be going to seed and looking a mess. It grows less quickly and less lush in the hot summer, but I still would not be leaving it untended to make my property less appealing.

I do a lot to be encouraging Nature here in my urban neighborhood and I make efforts toward climate protection. I have many flowering plantings for pollinating species to enjoy. I don't feel at all motivated to invite overgrowth and disorder in May or any other month.

If it matters, my lawn care guy has a push mower and does not use gas or electricity in his tasks. The mower runs on manpower and he sweeps up with a broom, not a blower. Hope I will be forgiven for not keeping the bees busy.

I suggest planting some lavender if it will do well in your area. I removed a grassy area in my backyard (full of crabgrass and tree roots) and replaced it with rocks and day lily plants and some lavender. The lavender brings so many bees whenever it's blooming (all the time). I had to even trim it back after the plants got so big.

I stupidly trimmed some without gloves and reached in to pull the cuttings out and got stung by a bee!

I would say the 6 plants have 100's of bees buzzing them around all the time!

Doesn't affect us in Arizona. Most people have rocks instead of grass (if they do have grass, it's a small patch for the dog) in both front and back yards. No one wants to cut, fertilize, and water grass when it's 110 out and we have a water shortage anyway.

Oh, please! This is nonsense. People mow grass not flowers. Just another 'feel good for no good' idea. If you want to help the bees then campaign against the harmful emf-producing 5g, cell towers, etc.

If your lawn is actually grass, and not a combination of grass, weeds, and clover, letting it grow won't accomplish anything. No, we will not be not mowing in May. I have a pollinator garden for the bees, as well as a bee house if they want to use it, although I haven't seen any action there. I get a lot of bumblebees, but not so many honeybees, but last year I finally saw a couple of those. The bees and hummingbirds also like the hosta flowers.

It's an interesting idea. I am woke and would support the idea, though our condo community would look like h*ll. I guess if everyone in the area was also doing it, it wouldn't matter.

I'm all for the pollinators--it's the ticks, fleas, chiggers, and snakes that I'm not happy about. So yes, I've already started mowing and will be continuing until the next freeze.

I've got plenty enough wild acreage for Mother Nature to do her thing. Just not in the few acres around my house.
