They live in "bug central" in western Maryland. Here in eastern PA, I've used citronella geraniums on my patio, but I didn't notice a significant reduction in mosquitoes. One thing I've noticed. If you can keep the long and deep vegetation away from where you are sitting, you have a better chance of keeping the mosquitoes away. Also, of course, no lights. I don't know if the Dynatraps work, but I've thought about trying them.

We have the half acre size in our front yard and another in our back yard. They need about two weeks to become adequately effective. We leave ours on 24/7. They do need to be emptied from time to time depending on your mosquito population.

We don't really have mosquitos here but, what with having less and less winter every year and it being a bit less arid (argh! The two reasons I stayed here decades ago when I was at a crossroad and contemplated moving back to CA), I am concerned that mosquitos are next.

Before I lost Rupert I was also concerned that we would start having fleas here, too. Guess I can let that one go.

It's good to know that you can do something that isn't destructive to make the mosquitos take off. I'm really a bonehead when it comes to planting/gardening but if there was a need to do this I'd be on it.

Now - how can we make flies go away FOREVER!! heh - At least I don't get them in my house anymore, due to the penny bags I hang but when I'm outside I hate dealing with them. Oh, and the terrifying bees. Already seeing bees too this year. I don't want to hurt them. Just please leave me alone. If bee hangs around me I will go into shock because they scare me so much. But if the world stopped having flies I'd be happy. Or, do flies serve a purpose?

Not a plant, but I've heard that dry ice attracts mosquitos as they are attracted to CO2. Put a dry ice trap a little ways away from your tables and chairs and they might leave you alone and go looking for whatever is giving off all that wonderful CO2 over There!
