I was another one who always wondered why people who didn't want to eat meat wanted something to taste like and look like meat. I feel like that was answered here, so thank you all for that.

I don't judge what somebody else wants to eat. Humans are omnivores by nature but, of course, there are so many choices.

Personally, I do like meat. I eat meat. But here's the hyprocrisy with me - if I had to kill the animal I'm out. I'll go veg in a NY minute. period.

I remember back when I was a kid (pre-teen, IIRC) and we knew this one family that was all veg. They all seemed so sickly. Now, keep in mind that this would have been in the 60s, so knowledge and choices were so much less. Now there are so many more choices and much more research that has gone into creating more for those who are veg or vegan.

The only part of it that concerns me is the soy. For a LOT of us, soy is a very bad choice. I'm not up on what all they are doing now, making non-meat "meats", but I would like to see there being better choices than soy based foods. What about beans? Aren't they a good source of protein AND you can make other stuff out of them and they can be more meat-like than so many other things.

KFC now is selling plant-based fake chicken....no thanks. Some of the problems with many of the plant-based foods now are using mostly soy-based products. Soy is not something I can eat. I think these foods are popular now because people still want to have fried chicken, burgers, etc...but don't want to actually eat fried chicken, hamburgers, etc.

It's not mysterious. Vegetarians buy that stuff in order to eat more protein. Eating enough protein can be a challenge with a vegetarian diet. If you aren't vegetarian or vegan and you don't have religious dietary restrictions, I wouldn't worry about it. Not really your problem or your business what vegetarians do. Live and let live, right?

I have tried KFC's impossible chicken nuggets and they weren't that amazing. Just okay. They were like okay chicken nuggets, not particularly juicy. They also only had one kind of sauce available and it wasn't very good. I might have liked them more with better sauce.

The impossible burgers, on the other hand, are not bad at all. I am not vegetarian, but I like to eat less meat for ethical reasons. (And if that offends anybody, respectfully, they can go talk to a wall.) I've liked the impossible burgers I've tried. Good quality hamburger tastes better, of course.

I have tried the Impossible Burger. It tasted just fine. Pleasantly surprised. The problem was later on, digesting all that pea protein was hard on my system, if you get my drift! LOL!

Yes, it is easy to wonder why someone would spend money on pills and processed foods when you can eat the delicious plant itself. Sometimes people are in transition to a healthier life-style and it bridges the gap, or it might be perceived to be convenient, or just a lack of awareness.

@rms1954 It is a great question. Cultural values/family conditioning often determine food choices. It sometimes takes a health crisis to determine if what we have always done is best for our well being as well as others. Will Tuttle (author of the World Peace Diet...also he travels internationally with his wife frequently giving lectures)...takes a deep dive into answering your question and the consequences of how we eat.

The whole fruit/veggie/nut/seed/grain/legume is delicious, rarely eat processed food. We eat very simply...considering timing and quality/quantity as well as ethics, health, and the environment. It makes us happy, healthy, and satisfied....just our way of life.

People are emotional/passionate about their food and the choices they make. There are many perspectives...each of us decides what is best.

Sadly, they're hard to avoid.

When I was growing up my mom only used margarine and while I didn't mind taste of it at the time, when I became an adult I only bought real butter and still do. Like meat substitutes, margarine is full of a lot of chemicals.

I tried one of the impossible type burgers and I thought it tasted gross, had a weird texture and then it upset my stomach. Sticking with black bean burgers.

@rms1954 Eating plant-based food isn't usually in lieu of eating vegetables (although I suppose it could be), it's often in lieu of eating meat. As previously stated, it can be a way for vegetarians to get more protein. It's also a way for non-vegetarians to cut back on meat consumption. There are many plant-based options out there and all are not equal (both in terms of ingredients and taste). Many people eat processed foods and fast food. If you eat a balanced diet of red meat in moderation, fish and lots of vegetables then you might not be interested in plant-based foods, but many people don't eat that way.

I get it as a substitution for meat, but why why purchase plant-based tomato, cauliflower, and other vegetables? Why not just eat REAL vegetables.
