😳 Math Dyslexia? 🙃

If that is even a word and/or thing then I most certainly have it because.....

I cannot multiply anything over 5 times w/o a calculator.

Cannot do fractions w/o a calculator or asking my Amazon DOT.

Cannot do/understand do algebra.

Cannot do/understand geometry.

Cannot read inbetween inches on a ruler. I have to ask my Amazon DOT.

In school we had to learn a slide rule. My eyes just glazed over.

Metric system....NOPE!

I have no problems adding or subtracting.

Some random math I can do like 2000 lbs = a ton, 4 qts = 1 gallon. stuff like that

I am a wiz at division!!!!

I firmly believe there is a "math gene" that is inherited. My father passed along the "math gene" to all my younger siblings but skipped me the oldest. The youngest is a "math genius" as he can calculate in his head. Not like Rain Man but close enough.

All of my children have the "math gene." Thank goodness because I could never help them w/their math homework after a certain level. That was my husband's job.

The oldest GC is a "math genius" because both parents have the "math gene." One of them is a "math genius."

The younger GC appear normal in math **at this time.**

@Mz iMac @It's called dyscalculia or dysarthmia. It can come from brain injury or have unknown causes. The be formally diagnosed with it, testing should reveal your functioning at two or more standard deviations below the mean and the dysfunction can not be due to illness, brain damage, failure to be instructed or improper instruction, or mental retardation, AKA, low intellectuality. Some parts of dysfunction in math can stem of other learning disabilities and attention deficits. You would need a formal assessment by a licensed SCHOOL psychologist to determine if you had a learning disability. Did you move during first, second or third grade? Can you do your tens tables? Learning the metric system requires the same type of cognitive function as learning the Imperial System, also called the English System, of weights and measures. You could have had poor instruction and poor textbooks which lacked examples and practice as well. Were you taught this trick in Algebra? Pemdas? Parentheses, exponents, roots, multiplication, division, addition and subtraction to help you with the order of operations necesssary for success in Algebra? Did your classroom instruction in second grade include memorization of the times tables past the fives tables? Did you also do verbal counting aloud by 2s,4,s, 6s and so on? Division and fractions are related. You might have had a textbook that did not provide enough examples and you could have had poor instruction. During this period of your life; first, second or third, did your parents separate or divorce or did you move or have any period of illness or psychological trauma that could have caused you to miss any instruction? Your problems could be the result in learning gaps. There could have been gaps in your instruction. There can be multiple causes besides dyscalculia, but it is possible you have it and you could also have other learning disabilities that affect your ability to learn math.

Don't feel bad. I was thankful I never had to pass algebra to get my degree. I tried 3 times to take algebra in college and 3 times I dropped out after 6 weeks. I can make it through regular arithmetic but X's and Y's just don't make sense. I just don't get it. Never tried geometry. I count on my fingers a lot or use a calculator

@Mindy D It appears I have a little of dyscalculia. A few of the symptoms apply to me but, not all of them.

I had scarlet fever when I was 3 or 4 yrs old.

Dysarthmia appears to deal w/the heart. I have no heart issues nor any of the syptoms mentioned.

Thanks for the info BTW. At least now I know the name of my "condition."

Thankfully, I can count in my head, how much "change" I should get back as I am a cash & carry type person when shopping in stores.

I also use my fingers sometimes. Especially, when playing "slots or blackjack."

A good Math teacher in grade school can make a big difference . I see math as a puzzle and I love puzzles.

I fluked geomatry & algabra in high school & summer school. I took "college prep" courses in high school.

My parents hired a tutor so I could graduate w/at least a D minus w/help from my father I might add.

My college degree required no math courses.

YUP! I can surely relate. Especially those word problems. Another one that my eyes just glaze over.

I had a student in my third grade special education who was diagnosed with dyscalculia. Any number that was a double digit or larger was seen "reversed". It wasn't picked up until third grade when double digit addition/subtraction was introduced in the curriculum. The problem became compounded when adding and the addition was greater than 9.

For instance. If the numbers were 76+18, she would add 8+6 and say 14, but put the one down and carry the 4 to the tens column. Then she would add the carried 4 plus the 7 plus the 1 and say 12 but would write 21. So, her answer would be 211 instead of the correct answer of 94. When she was asked to read out loud the answer she wrote down she would read it as 112. Subtraction was just as difficult, if not harder.

You can see how frustrating this was for her and ME! We had a therapist work with her to try and train her brain to receive the numbers correctly, but it never quite happened. She later moved to Texas as her father was transferred. She's now in 7th grade, and I've been retired for three years, but I often think about her and what obstycles she will have to overcome in her life due to her disability.

This is all giving me flashbacks to Mr. Guardino's algebra class in 9th grade! I'm going to have nightmares about math tonight. 🤯

I'm no math wiz, but I do know the Order of Operations PEMDAS for basic algebra. I laugh at how indignant some people get when answering an equation buy just going from left to right, or plugging it into their calculator as written without applying PEMDAS. They're so sure of the answer but they are so wrong 😆

When I went to Catholic school, we had to memorize everything. Our time tables was one of them. We were drilled daily for the whole third grade. There was a chart on the wall with everyone's name on it.

The teacher would out of nowhere ask how much is 8x9. If you didn't know, she would erase your star on the chart for both the 8 and 9 time tables. It was brutal. I hated it, but I learned. If you can't multiply, you can't do division or fractions.

I struggled with math until I was in high school....then the light turned on. I find it easy and do a lot of figuring in my head using the base of 10.

I took geometry and aced it. I took algebra and like many, I have no idea what it was about...I am still in the dark.

When I studied for my Real Extate exam, we would get questions like

a homeowners lot is 234 feet by 110 ft. There is a house on the lot that is 40x29' with a garage that is 29x29'. The home owner wants to plant grass on the lot.

Grass seed costs $40 for a bag that covers 1/4 acre. How many bags of grass seed does the owner need and how much will it cost?

I would get the correct answer, but it took many steps. Most of my classmates figured it out faster. They said I should use algebra....faster and easier. Yeah, right. I'll do it my way.

My father by the way, was a math genius...Rain Man smart....his brain was a human calculator. He was truly gifted. I have never met anyone who could do math as easy as breathing. He never used a calculator. He tried to teach me to do math in my head and I did earn to do basic math in my head, but I don't have a gifted mind in that department. You have to be born with it.

I have a 13 year old grandson who is very good with math....not as good as my father, but he is amazing doing numbers in his head. His cousin, my granddaughter takes advanced courses in math in high school....she is very bright in math too.

Seems like the math gene missed me and my kids and passed to the grands.

I think if you have dyscalculia, you COULD learn the concepts with the right teacher and IF you have the desire and persistence!

I do think I have it- math was always very hard for me. But when I was required to pass advanced math classes including 1 yr of calculus to get my biochem degree, I slowly went back and restarted with algebra, and did it- with a LOT of extra help and devoted time-

Now I do use advanced math in my job at times, and I remember it.

I did enough math to get by and no more. Hated it for as long as I can remember and still do. Not a case of couldn't, didn't want too. Love the calculator on my phone though.

I have a cell phone, only for emergencies which stays in my car. However, I NEVER leave home w/o a calculator which I have in every pocketbook I own.
