Credit Card Fraud

Just got my Mastercard statement and there was $1884 in fraudulent charges, half from Spectrum cable and half from Comcast cable. I don't have accounts with either. I've had the occasional problem over the years but nothing like this.

I notified my bank. They told me there is already $535 in fraudulent charges on my next statement. I'm surprised I didn't receive an alert.

Yes, they quickly closed the account and will not accept any charges from Spectrum or Comcast on the new account.

I also set up Alerts for any charge over a certain amount....I had one fraudulent charge last year and they notified me right away and was taken care of shortly there after..

Today I received a letter stating all my medical info & the CC on file had been ransomwared...the company is so sorry & included a list of things I need to do to protect myself from their mistake. Just Flipping Wonderful! When are companies going to be required to do more than say sorry & pay a fine to each customer that gets screwed over, I'm fed up with this bs.

@PickyPicky3 Insteresting that you were not notified. I have set up notifications for purchases over 300.00. Sorry for all the fraud charges, some people are just awful. My card was also haced a few years ago what a pain especially for any charges that are on auto pay, like cable, sirus radio, etc

@kitcat51 I have a feeling we haven't seen anything yet. Just wait until the Russians get really POed at us and start hacking everything in sight. In Albuquerque, they've recently shut down both the school district and county government. As soon as safeguards are put in place, they figure out how to circumvent them.

You are the one with the fraudulent charges, probably because someone had your card and your identifying information and they have Cable in your name. I assume your bank canceled that card and is issuing you a new card and I assume you called Comcast to report the fraud to them.

@PickyPicky3 I realize it's of little solace to you, but unfortunately you are in good company. I work in law enforcement and not a day goes by that we don't take many reports of this type of fraud. It's big business for the thieves. 😞

That's really unsettling; hope you can get it all straightened out quickly. It's scary how many scammers are out there now.

I don't think all banks do that. My bank does but opt into it, I chose $500. I get a text message and phone call whenever there is a $500 plus charge. They put a hold on the account until I verify either by text or phone call that the charge is legitimate. I also have this on my bank debit card which has been hacked twice but they didn't get anything. Still. Getting a new card is a pain in the rear.

All of the charges were in the $100 - $135 range, so it looks like my thief paid this month's cable bills for friends and family. What a generous person!

****Now I'm thinking, maybe it's a business. Perhaps my thief charges $50 to pay your cable bill. Or perhaps takes your gun and in return pays your cable bill.

****Neither Comcast or Spectrum has an account in my name. So this person is just using my card, not using my name to open an account.

My daughter goes over my accounts with a fine tooth comb.

She likes doing it and I like her doing it. I think I agree with many of you.

It's surprising how many people don't look it it as often as they should.

I check my Bank Account twice daily. My Bank (Chase) notifies me if anything goes over $200. Before I buy anything over that amount, I always notify them.

I have alert set on my cards and my debit card. You can set the alert as low as $3 in case they are trying you out.

@PickyPicky3 Contact Spectrum and Comcast - they should have fraud departments and should be able to figure out where the charges came from (and whose account got the amounts credited to their accounts).

What is strange is that it's two different cable companies and I've never seen them overlap geographic areas.

My friend has a credit card that she rarely uses and used it once in the last several months at a hotel, and when she checked her card, there were charges for additonal room stays about 400 miles away on the next day. No one touched her card except for the person at the one hotel when she checked in so she is thinking that it was the clerk at the front desk.

Just a word of advice, keep ALL emails, coorespondence regarding these charges, and make notes of who and when you spoke with anyone in regards to this, so it doesn't come back to bite you months later.

I have the same with my credit card($500)..I notify them if I'm spending a lot on a certain day.

Years ago I was moving around Christmas time..I called them to tell them that I was on a shopping spree for my moving and Christmas shopping..and to raise it to $2000 for the day.

It was embarrassing but after 3 hrs. of of buying in all kinds of stores..My card was denied at the mattress store.I called the bank..after I gave them some codes they knew it was me and opened it to charge the mattress..I stopped after that! There was a message from the bank on my answering machine to call them ASAP.
