Paypal question

I'm purchasing an item on e bay through PP. I made an offer and it was accepted. I clicked on the link in my email to finalize. I am paying by CC. That should give some protection. But I want to make sure it's paid through Goods and Services so I have PP protection.

Is Goods and Services now automatic when buying from e bay? Or automatic when paying with CC?

Or will that option be available once I click "finalize"? Or am I being stoopid?

I never click through any email to pay for items from ebay. I go directly to my ebay account and pay for my items that way by choosing PP as my option to pay.

i go to ebay through my rebate sites so that i can get rebates on my purchases. click on ebay via mr rebates and it takes me to ebay. i sign in and pay for my items from there.

@Shelbelle @SilleeMee , ok. I went to my ebay and I had a message from the seller saying my offer was accepted. I clicked to pay by PP from my ebay message. It takes me to the same screen on PP that gives me a choice of my CC or bank account. Once I click on my CC the bottom of the screen says, Pay Now.

I'm back to wondering, if I click pay now, am I covered through Goods and Services? Or just through my cc? Or does it not matter since I'm using a CC?

I go to my cart on ebay and pay for my stuff there. When you choose PP as your method of payment there you'll have a choice of cards (cards which you have placed in your PP wallet) to use to pay for your stuff. Once paid for the transaction will appear on your PP account activity and there you will see the type of sale it was. Not sure what you mean by "goods and services"...??

I understand your question, no one else seemed to pick up what you are asking. Not a frequent eBay user, but am fairly certain this defaults to goods and services. I can't recall an option to send funds to family or friends within any eBay transaction I've made.
Also seems likely you would have a secondary coverage with your credit card company if there is a problem.

Edited to add: Years ago, it was common for sellers online to request that you send payment via PayPal using the "send money to friends" feature as it did not incur any fee. As near as I can recall, those were transactions outside the eBay platform. I think you can feel confident you are protected within the eBay ecosystem.

when using paypal to pay someone OFF of ebay, you often have the choice of "goods and services" or "friends and family." i think if you are going to pay via ebay it will always be through "goods and services" and not "friends and family."

it is usually not good to pay anyone via "friends and family" unless you know them well or paying them back. you will not NOT be covered and not be able to make any claim.

@SilleeMee I have a feeling I'm making this more difficult than it is but sometimes I do that without intending to.

This is a large purchase for me. I know that folks who pay by Friends and Family aren't covered by PP insurance IF the item never arrives. I just wanted to make sure I'm covered if the seller never sends this item. It's located clear across the country from me. If it never arrives, it would be very difficult to travel to that area and file a claim. Just want to be sure my purchase is protected IF it never arrives.

ANY item purchased via eBay is protected, regardless of how you "pay" for the item. So if there's an issue with the seller (or buyer) you're protected to get your money back as a buyer & not be scammed/frauded by a buyer! If that was your question??

I'm a frequent user of both ebay and paypal ... and have no idea where "goods and services" comes into this .... where do you see that?

Like others, I put an ebay purchase in my shopping cart, ready to go.

Then I go to TopCashBack and click Ebay which opens another ebay screen.

I go to my shopping cart, select Paypal, and then choose which payment method in there that I wish to use.

Might as well always get the rebate, right?

I also use a rebate site for ebay, works on BIN and items won by auction. I find it I have an accepted offer the rebate does not always work.

i mentioned this above......there are two ways to pay when you use PAYPAL to make a payment to a person or some other entities like small businesses. when you go in, you are often given a choice of paying via "goods and services" OR paying via "friends and family." with "friends and family" there is no purchase protection and no fees.....which is why some people like to use it. with "goods and services" you are covered by purchase protection and the payee is going to have to pay some fees to receive that payment.

@sunshine45 and @moto explain it better than me. PayPal offers 2 different methods of sending $ to someone else. One is Goods and Services, where someone is selling something and someone else is buying that item. PayPal charges the seller a fee because the seller is using PP to essentially make money. And PP offers protection to the buyer in case there’s a problem with the item or in case it never arrives.

The other method of sending money through PP is Friends and Family, where someone can transfer money to a friend or family member. In this situation the transaction is not making anyone money. PP, I think, charges a very minimal fee for using this service. Or maybe there’s no charge, I’m not sure. The money is not protected because it’s assumed the transaction is safe since someone is sending their friend or family money. Shouldn’t be a problem.

Over time some sellers, not on EBay but on other sites where folks buy and sell stuff, realized if they sold an item online but asked the buyer to pay on PP using the Friends and Family method, the seller could avoid PP’s higher fees that are charged to sellers. So seller kept more of their money from the sale. But while this is a benefit to seller, there is no protection for buyer if seller receives money but never sends the item to buyer.

Apparently Ebay DOESN’T offer this choice. It’s all considered Goods and Services since someone is selling and someone is buying. That’s why I never saw the two options.

First, you are covered by eBay's Money Back Guarantee for items that are never received or not as described. You do have a time limit on eBay's coverage. I would suggest you first try eBay if anything is wrong with your purchase since opening any other type of dispute would then close eBay's.

Second, if you aren't satisfied with eBay, then try Paypal. Nor does it matter what Paypal considers this to be as it is an eBay purchase. This would also work if you somehow miss eBay's deadline. Paypal gives you 180 days to open a case.

Third, if all else fails try opening a case with your credit card. Call the number on the back of the card.

Any PayPal payments made through eBay automatically default to "goods and services". If you send a payment directly from PayPal you have the option of specifying that the payment is either for "goods and services" or "send money to a friend".

If you pay for an valid eBay transaction, whether you pay through PayPal or not, you are covered by eBay's Buyer Protection Program.
