Just heard it on the news........FL poster, on here have said groves selling out to big developers.for big bucks.

No trees = no oranges

I gifted box of Honeybells.........they received and half way thru the box.......mine won't ship until next week - if it even happens.

Here in Chicago there have been beautiful oranges for the last month.

The taste was so sweet, beautiful color, great texture.

Last week the 8 lb bags sold for $3.97.

They were USA ,probably California.

We get oranges from the valley here in Texas; they are very good. I can't imagine orange growers selling out to developers..,they are literally selling their livelihood. Guess they made them an offer they couldn't refuse. That is bound to have at least some impact on the economy in Florida.

@Duckncover Did you ever farm for a living? You might as well gamble for a living--at least you'd know the odds. Farming of any kind is an enormous and risky investment.

You could live well for generations off the sale proably, or go broke in two years farming. Choice?

They come up and sell Mesa oranges right off the tree every year. Got my bag Saturday & have sores from eating so many. They sell off the truck for about a month. I see orange juice prices going sky high if this is true.

I have always wanted to grow citrus, but no such thing in Maryland.

I'll bet it is glorious to be able to go out and pick your own oranges.

I did have a white peach tree many years back, but the squirrels always got to the fruit before I could.

There is a big orange grove practically in the center of my FL town. But apparently the disease got to the trees. There is now discussion of putting 1300 homes there. No one wants that, besides the land owners to make millions, the housing developers, and the local government looking for more tax money. Another citrus grove close to my office was already razed and senior housing is being built there now.

This small town is quickly losing its charm and all the reasons why we moved here. This won't be my last house. We will just have to move further out to get away from all this traffic and congestion.

Wow. I would never criticize any farmer for selling his land for what he considers a good price. I am sure no one else thought that was what I was implying. I blame developers for wanting to level the entire country and put up rows and rows of ugly boxes they call homes.

I have not seen any orange juice at all in the grocery store in a couple of weeks. I am sure when they get the next shipment in, the price will have jumped up even more than it already has.

My small WV grocery store had orange juice when I was there on the 12th, but may not now that news has reported a shortage. Unless my husband specifically asks for it, I never buy this juice.

Oranges are still in a good supply around here. We do not drink orange juice so I cannot say if there is a shortage starting with that product.

Plenty of grapefruit, too.

This is bad news as I am in the habit of juicing oranges and grapefruits everyday for my daily citrus blast - 2 oranges, 1 grapefruit and 1/2 a lemon or a lime topped off by a splash of concord grape juice - so tangy and tasty - I'm addicted.

I was able to get some Cara Cara oranges for only two weeks or so. Usually they are available for a couple of months and they are my favorite. So disappointed but at least I could get regular oranges.

I was going to order the Honeybells today, but I read the reviews weren't very good and I didn't want to blow $50 on so-so fruit. They looked really good when they were showing them, but reviews said otherwise, so I did not order. Are they worth ordering?

Well, that is a high price, but if they were really large Cara Cara's I'd probably buy them. I used to live in NJ where we had Shop Rite. I'm in NC now, and I usually go to Food Lion. There are a lot of other grocery stores in towns about 20 mi. away, but that's kind of far to go.
