Queen Elizabeth at Windsor

An armed intruder was arrested on the grounds of Windsor Castle where Queen Elizabeth and some members of her family were spending Christmas, Thames Valley Police said on Saturday.

A 19-year-old man from Southampton who was in possession of "an offensive weapon" was captured shortly after 8:30 a.m. local time and remains in custody, the police said.

According to the police statement, officers from Thames Valley and the Metropolitan Police responded to the security breach within minutes. The man did not enter any buildings, the police said.

"The man has been arrested on suspicion of breach or trespass of a protected site and possession of an offensive weapon. He remains in custody at this time," Thames Valley Police Superintendent Rebecca Mears said in the statement. "Members of the Royal Family have been informed about the incident," she added.

I am thinking she will hold out for her 70th year celebration, then step down. Wouldn't she rather see her son be crowned the King than pass away while still on the throne? Just a thought.

No, they caught the nut in time, but, goes to show you the Queen can't even enjoy Christmas in peace without some kind of threat.

I saw too, online, where another nut managed to climb up on the balcony where the Royals stand to wave on occasions like marriage, etc. He got so far by ladder then shimmied up the rest of the way.

They got him too before he was able to gain access. If I remember correctly this time it was at Buckingham Palace.

I'd be a nervous wreck.

It isn't easy, being a royal.

Think about how lucky we (regular people) are that we can freely walk around, go wherever we want, etc. without cameras and threats following us all around.

Nervous wreck? Seriously? Do you honestly think they were ever in any danger?

Even if the nutcase in question managed to access the property, there's no way he'd be able to actually find any of them. It's not like he could walk in the front door and there they all would be, in the front room. Those estates are huge, with hundreds of rooms, and it's easy for anyone to get lost.

From what I've seen and read, they all have much more security than any of them actually need, but it's probably done just to make them look more important than they actually are. That's JMO, of course.

@Tinkrbl44 Actually a stranger did make his way into the palace and wound up in the Queens bedroom where she was asleep. She asked him to leave, he didn't so she called security. I believe this was in the eighties.

I don't think your aware of the threat when the guy was in the Queens bedroom and she woke up to see this strange man in her room. She managed to stall him till she could hit the panic button. He had broke in twice.

While not common, intrusions into Royal palaces do occasionally happen. Perhaps the most famous incident dates back to 1982 when a man named Michael ******an, who was 31 at the time, climbed a wall of Buckingham Palace, crawled through an open window and made his way to the bedroom of Queen Elizabeth II, who was sleeping.

The Queen was unharmed, although the intrusion sparked a serious questions about the palace security, especially when it emerged that her repeated attempts to summon help were ignored.

In 2004, a fathers’ rights activist dressed as Batman evaded security to stage a protest on a Buckingham Palace balcony. Jason Hatch, a Fathers 4 Justice campaigner, used a ladder to scale the perimeter fence before climbing onto the balcony, where the royals appear on ceremonial occasions such as the wedding of Prince William and Catherine in 2011. Stand-up comedian Aaron Barschak had highlighted lax security by gate-crashing Prince William's 21st birthday party at Windsor in 2003.

I agree.

The Queen made a statement when she ascended the throne almost 70 years ago (paraphrase) that she would serve her Country as long as she lived and I believe she will keep that commitment.

@Love my grandkids Why? She will likely continue to have health issues and have to cancel or not attend events. Why put yourself through that? It will likely get to the point where she can't do anything. Seems to me that is just making the case that there is no point to having the Royals at all, if she won't pass the baton on to someone who can show up.

@Sushismom Yes, I do remember that quote now, in fact I can hear her saying it. I just don't think that is the wisest thing to do, but of course it is her decision. It will be interesting to see Charles as King.

I think Charles, William, Camilla and Kate will go to events and sub for her when necessary. I hope she draws her last breath as the Queen of England.
