BUT, don't think i can afford one ,i have had back pain ,lower right side, for months, does any one know anything about mattress pads,i read a latex one is better for back pain, i know very little about this ,just what i am reading on searching info.

Have you considered a memory foam mattress topper? I like them about 3" thick and try to pick one with a high density so it's not too soft or saggy. I haven't bought one for a number of years, but have gotten them on Overstock where they list the density.

Speaking about a mattress topper from Overstock, I highly recommend the following: Cheer Collection All Season Plush Rayon from Bamboo Mattress Pad. It helped me from buying a new mattress for a few years!!

Funny you should ask......last night was sleep #4 on my new mattress pad.

Oh, memory foam beds! I hate them!

I didn't have the memory foam topper, but I had a full memory foam mattress, expensive,but the worst part?

HOT! HOT! HOT!

It made me sweat my butt off, even sleeping with my ceiling fan on high! I couldn't give it away fast enough.

I've read that newer versions of memory foam also have a 'gel' layer that helps keep them from getting so hot, memory foam absorbs our body heat and then you're sleeping on that heat.

I also had a memory foam pillow and woke up with damp hair every morning.

There were many, many complaints about how hot they were, I guess that's why they eventually added the 'cooling' gel layer.

Never again for me with any memory foam, just my experience.

Just keep in mind that replacing your mattress will be MUCH cheaper than any treatment you may require for the treatment of back pain.

With the older innerspring mattresses, a sheet of plywood between the mattress and box springs was often enough to relieve simple back pain issues.

Mattress outlet stores carry name brand quality bedding at reduced prices, as some don't pass inspection standards because of simple things like stitching. Don't be afraid to check them out, in order to get the best product for your money.

I thought one of those 3 inch memory foam toppers would make my back feel better. Was I ever wrong. I had it on my bed for about 3 weeks. First of all I sink into it and have a really hard time turning over, and I go back and forth all night. Secondly, it's hot hot hot. And I'm usually not bothered by heat. I realized my arthritic back needs support which I didn't get. I feel much better with my firmer mattress.

If you lived close to me I'd gladly give it to you.

I've tried to sell it cheap and haven't had any takers.

If you have a larger furniture store in your area I'd check with them to see if they have any seconds or returns that they sell for less. My store gives people 30 days to try out a mattress and if they don't like it they can return it. Then they have a special area that they sell those returned mattresses and other furniture.

Every year, I add another pad to my mattress .... this last one - I found at Amazon is like sleeping on a cloud!

@KingstonsMom I've heard people say memory foam is hot, however, I have a mattress on one bed and a topper on another and have never had a hot night on either. I always sleep with the window open and pile on the blankets but am never hot. I've been sleeping on foam for over 15 years and have had many toppers. I love them.

mattresses come in all price ranges and most stores offer 'easy pay': long term payment with no interest rates. between sale prices and easy pays, hopefully do-able for you.

toppers are only an 'iffy' temporary fix. in the long run, best to replace an old mattress. trust me: I just replaced a FORTY year old one after years of different ineffective toppers.

I also do not like memory foam. Just ordered my 2nd Inofia hybrid mattress in a box from Amazon. Got an 8" and gonna put it in the guest room and got myself a 10" to go on my bed.

Most comfortable mattress I have ever slept on. It contours to your body with support. I love it.

We bought a nice quality Sera Queen Inter spring mattress with pillow top 15 years ago. We have always used various 2" memory foam toppers ( the kind that have a "cool" side). We're getting close to life span for our mattress but never expected it to last this long.

I got a new mattress in July. I do not replace my mattresses that often. Certainly not by the manufacturer's guidelines, lol! For that reason, I knew Idid not want a memory foam one. I purchased one with coils from The Original Mattress Factory. They are headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio. I have been very happy with their product!

@goldensrbest Have you gone to a doctor? It sounds like you could have a herniated disk problem.

This type of pain often will travel down one side of the body and it can be pretty painful.

A new and different mattress won't get rid of the problem, but if yours is truly worn out, it might help in addition to medical care.

I agree memory foam is terrible. Even in shoes...my feet feel like they are simmering in hot water. Any mattress or mattress-topper that claims to shape to the form of your body just means you will have no air circulating around you and it will be too hot to get comfortable, let alone sleep. Didn't like memory foam pillows for the same reason. Tried one with the gel layer in it that I bought at Costco but I never could get used to it. The only one that stays cool for my neck and face is the My Pillow. Love that thing.
The recommendations here for the toppers with bamboo sound like they are worth a try.
