If a friend rents out something for you to use, for instance a generator, would you pay your friend the same amount of money which a rental company charges?

He did all of that! Bless his heart. I took him out to lunch and told him he could choose anything on the menu that his heart desired.

If a friend needed a generator and I had one, I would loan it to you and not charge. If you're wanting to do something nice as a "thank you" I would get them a gift certificate to their favorite restaurant.

That's what friends are for! I think it's a nice gesture to offer to pay but I bet he doesn't take it. I know my DH wouldn't. Sweet of you to take him out for lunch too! Hope you are doing okay since you're in need of a generator!

It depends on whether it's a comparable model in perfect condition. Rentals tend to be new models, well-maintained. If not, I'd negotiate. It won't help you if it concks out in the middle of a blizzard.

This is what I would do....is your friend charging you? If not, then give a nice gift cert plus a meal...you already went to lunch.

My friend never asked for any money for letting me use his generator. But I feel obligated to pay for his generous offering especially at a time when it was an emergency. I want to pay him for his help. I just want to know how much to pay him. I don't want to go overboard b/c that would be inappropriate, I feel.

At the time of the power outage, you couldn't even find a generator to rent let alone buy one.

I doubt as a friend he would accept $$, I know I wouldn't or my husband. As it is a "he" perhaps a nice gift certificate to a favorite restaurant, cabellas (if he does that type of thing) or favorite store. Price wise? Depends on how long you used the generator. A couple of days, $50. A week? Maybe $100. I think any more than that would be too much as he is in fact, a friend and may be insulted or feel awkward if that makes sense. Insulted may be too strong a word but you get my drift.

I would.... I would maybe call around and see how much it is? Especially if you can afford it. The gesture goes a long way with a friend feeling appreciated.

If I buy something from a business and my friend is the owner, I don't expect a discount. I think people expect friends to always give them discounts or whatever or in this case they can loan it to you for free. But I try to look at things from the other person's perspective. It's their business, it's how they make living and I want to support them. In this case, they own but maybe their money is tight and I want to show appreciation.

Never a lender or borrower be.... is more about respecting a friend and not letting material things come between you. So being willing to be generous should be a two way street.

I I would not pay to rent it from him. That is what friends do for each other. I would offer to fill his tank with gas for transporting and hooking it up. I would do the same when he picks it up. That is all.
