I suppose they disobey when they sense danger. They learn some dangers during extensive training.

It's a good question I'd like to know, too.

@Tinkrbl44 I do not know how they are trained,but because for more than a decade we lived near a fully blind neighbor who walked our sidewalks regularly with his dog, I know well-trained dogs do incredible work for us.

The only "danger" I ever saw that beautiful setter walk him into was spray from our lawn sprinkler and we all decided the only reason even that happened was that the spray wasn't an obvious problem when it was moving away from the sidewalk.

That problem happened only once, but I believe we 3 humans learned avoidance techniques, not the dog.

@violann This concerns me. Are the animals harmed in any way when they are trained. I couldn't stand it...animals who are harmed in labs or factory farming turns my stomach. Please confirm that the hankie is require because of kindness nor harm in the name of "training".

@phoenixbrd I had a neighbor who worked with numerous Lab pups for socialization, in preparation for their professional training, for many different services. They followed up on some eventual placements. They had wonderful outcomes to share.

These dogs are handled with positive reinforcement, never harsh treatment, or corrections. You'd never want to break the spirit of such a wonderful, and valuable companion, or any other for that matter.

The bond they eventually establish with their owner is one of devotion and mutual trust. That comes from patient trainers who can turn the dog's work into a proud, satisfying activity.

Just try to adopt one of these dogs that doesn't quite make the cut. It's probably easier to adopt an infant, Lol. I was just talking to a neighbor about this very subject today while out walking my GSD/Lab that he adores.

He said, "I was applying for a military Lab reject. I get it, but I just couldn't pass anymore tests, inspections, or evaluations. I wish now I hadn't given up."

They take the care and life of these dogs seriously. Even rejects.
