Because Tuesday 12/21 is the winter solstice, so after that the days will get longer. I hate these "dark at 5pm" days.

Agree….I find it depressing and it makes me feel tired. 6pm feels like 10pm.

@DREAMON Ditto! What prompted this thread was my feeling like it's been a long evening and getting tired and I should go to bed, then looking at the clock and seeing it was only 9pm.

I never mind when darkness comes earlier. In fact I don't even think about it. I know it affects many people but I go about my business as usual , early darkness doesn't interfere.

I totally agree with you....

it's antiquated and messes with many folks internal clocks

As I have gotten older my perfect night vision has gotten awful.

Sorry, I didn't consider my post as highjacking your thread. Moving the time by 1 hour does change the number of light and dark hours. That was my point.

I really dislike the having a dark late afternoon. The time change is archaic....wish it would be addressed.

@hckynutjohn Back home it would start getting dark at around 4pm but down here we get another two hours of daylight, although dwindling by 6pm.

It would be nice to have universal time, though. I agree.

@Pearlee Here in western WA it's been dark before 4:30 and the rainy, cloudy weather makes it worse. I'd be thrilled if it didn't get dark until 5!

The days start getting longer beginning on 12/8, not on the Winter Solstice. It's only seconds now, but they will add up to minutes soon. Check out your local area online, or your local weather forecast on tv.

I don't know if it's the power of suggestion for me but I look forward to the winter solstice every year. I guess it tricks my mind and makes me hopeful that spring is coming and more light.

For me, this early darkness is awful. It's like I miss a whole half day. Hate it. I like to still be moving and grooving until 9:30pm in the lighter months.

Pearlee, my late husband used to say the same thing. He was energized and excited by the days that followed the winter solstice. It is a very positive approach to the darkening days because they will increase their light following the solstice, even if the increments are very slight.

He was an avid gardener, and so he looked forward to the emergence of new plants.

Spring will be coming again soon!

I'm in Central Illinois and we haven't even had a measurable snowfall yet and we're wishing away winter and Daylights Savings Time? I love winter! The snow, the sounds of snowblowers, the muffled soundscape, the brightness of snow crystals, crunching snow beneath my feet, the crisp air, rabbit paw prints, children's snowmen and attempted snow forts/igloos. Christmas lights underneath the snow, sitting in front of the fireplace at 4pm, starting a slow cooked dinner at 2pm, this magical season is just as endearing as any other season. Maybe I just don't want to wish my time away. Then again, life is experienced differently by everyone. I hope it stay's dark for farmers so chores can be completed early and enjoy lost time with family while sowing, planting and harvesting consumes the rest of the year. I highly recommend making a snow Angel or throwing a snowball into the air. Are you sure you'll be around to do it next winter? I'm not. Live it up!
