Costco chicken

Normally I do not buy premade chickens at Costco, but I was there today when they were setting them out...so I bought one.

When I got home, I put it in the refrigerator for tonight's dinner.

when I began to prepare dinner, I cut the legs off of the chicken and sliced a few slivers of the breast to warm up.

OMG! The chicken was raw. The meat around the legs was very red...not pink. I put the pieces in the microwave and cooked them on high for 15 minutes. Then I put the rest of the chicken in a casserole dish and placed it in the oven. It is baking in there now.

I wish I would have taken a picture of the chicken legs before I nuked them, but I did take a pic of the chicken I placed in the casserole dish.

I don't want anything from Costco, but they better make sure their chickens are cooked completely. Somone could get sick eating raw chicken. I plan to shown them the pictures the next time I am there.

Wow! That is horrible. Someone really messed up.

I buy the rotisserie chickens at Costco all the time, about every two weeks. Never had a bad one or one that was improperly cooked.

It makes me so mad when this happens. It's happened to me (not at Costco) a few times. There's no excuse.

The industrial rotisseries have precise timing, from what I was told. So how could it be messed up?

On the flip side, I picked up a chicken last week that was so dry and overdone I could hardly chew it. It went in the trash the next day.

At least, overcooked is not dangerous. Undercooked sure is.

Notify the store, their equipment for cooking the chicken isn't working properly. I've had lots of Costco deli chickens & that's never happened. Sorry @Carmie.

I don't buy their chicken because I don't like the taste of it but I do

see the people manning the chicken station with thermometers.

Someone dropped the ball on this one.....didn't you notice any blood

in the bottom of the container?

The one's in the store are also golden brown, yours does not look like that.

Last year was the first time I bought one of the Costco chickens after hearing people raving about them for years. Mine was raw, too. Since then I've seen lots of complaints on different sites. I won't try again.

@Mistreatedbycs It was golden brown. The part shown has the legs and wings removed and one half side of the breast. I think most of the skin is gone.

The container bottom was black, so I didn't see my blood until I cut into the chicken. It was very bloody around the legs. That's the part that looks red in the pics.

yes, someone dropped the ball on this. I bought it around 1 pm...kinda early. I hope they didn't sell anymore that were not cooked properly.

I just removed the chicken from my oven....it is done now.

I usually buy a couple of the rotisserie chickens every month but I am usually cutting them up for chicken salad or chicken enchiladas, etc. I have never gotten an under cooked chicken. Something must be wrong with their equipment. I am sure they will have many complaints.

@Carmie, it would be a good idea to phone Costco and alert them about the chicken so they can inspect any remaining for doneness. A phone call now could save someone from getting seriously ill.

I bought the chicken today around 1 pm. They are getting ready to close in 30 minutes. Too late now, but I will call them first thing tomorrow.

I can't imagine anyone would be eating that chicken. It was pretty raw, not just a little pink.

Whatever went wrong, they need to fix it.

Same thing happened to me last week at a grocey store (not Costco). The store associate had just put freshly cooked chickens out. They looked brown and crispy and delicious!

An hour later, when i sliced into the chicken there was an odd gel like consistency to the breast meat. Cut the chicken open and it was all bloody and raw. We had to throw it out, but i did take a couple pics and will show them next time i'm there. i have the receipt. The store is an hour away round trip.

@Carmie I am not a big chicken eater, but when we do get chicken, it is a Costco rotisserie. I have never seen anything like this. Take your picture to the store. It may be faulty equipment, which means that you will not be the only one with this complaint; it may be poor training of staff; or, like many places today, there is a shortage and this chicken was put in with the staff hurrying to get the chickens done since they had run out earlier. No matter what, Costco will make it right.

I've bought chicken from Sam's and never had that problem. Even Publix does a great job.

@Carmie you are the third person I know of that has had a problem with the chicken from Cosco. My niece gets well done chicken from Cosco.

It's good that you were able to save it, but still give them a call. They would want to know.

Call your local Costco and not the 800 number.

Ask for a manager, usually you'll get someone in the office but yet, its Saturday and they are so busy not sure if anyone will be in the office.

Keep your receipt, next time you go, stop at CS and they'll refund you the cost of the chicken and they don't want it back.

OMG, there's no way I'd have eaten that chicken. I wouldn't have attempted to finish cooking it. I'd have been straight on the phone and I'd also be emailing corporate to let them know about it.

There's absolutely no excuse for getting anything that undercooked. A lot of people could get sick from that and, if you buy a rotisserie chicken, you expect it to be fully cooked. Good thing you at least took photos. Disgusting.

The purple pink color of the cooked chicken is myoglobin , it's in the muscle meat of the chicken and cooking releases a protein that causes the color . It's not blood . Chickens have most of the blood removed when they are processed . When you cut up a whole chicken you seldom see any blood , as you would in beef .

@judianne That's why at times you see the juices run pink around the joints even if the chicken is really done and safe to eat. The one in the picture looks like the meat is raw whoever.
