USPS trouble

I saw this post this morning.

"My mail carrier just informed me that two other mail carriers from a Philadelphia station and one carrier from a suburban station were robbed at gun point and had their mail keys stolen from them. Someone was also caught on camera, at a Philadelphia post office trying to steal the mail box from the parking lot."

I feel bad for the mail carriers.

@drizzellla truth be told, I feel for anyone working a job where they are responsible for anything of value. So many different workers are ripe for danger right now.

I am actually more worried about the violence rampant in the world than I am about disease because I have no real idea how to live a full life and still feel safe. At least with disease I can pick and choose where to go and when.

@millieshops I had not put into perspective your comment, but yes you are right! If we put the effort into stopping violence that we have into COVID it would make a huge difference.

I guess that's what made me so mad and I posted about the Dr. Phil episode a few days ago. It seems we just sort of overlook a lot of crime now.

These days, it seems if someone wants it, they take it. Easy peasy without consequence. Pathetic is our society's name. Sad and scary.

I've lived and worked in Detroit. Crime isn't new. Just when it visits your cul de sac people now getting upset.

I agree with your comment. But these incidents happened in Philadelphia, the poorest big city in the US. Ain't no cul de sacs here. Sadly, Philly is all too familiar with crime.

@Sooner I don't feel we overlook it as there's plenty of talk and news reports about it, but we seem to tolerate it. If the mob robbery at Nordstrom's had occurred 30 years ago, all hell would have broken loose among outraged citizens. Now everyone is sort of ho-hum and they move on.

I hope cops are making every effort to identify and prosecute the offenders in some of these recent thefts. They did a great job pinpointing those who participated in the Jan. 6th debacle, so it can be done.

About a month ago a small neighborhood post office was broken into at night and all the mail in PO Boxes was stolen. I had a business box at that address because I was trying to support keeping the station open (it is on my way home). I moved my P.O. Box to the main station as I don't feel safe even going by late in the afternoon and when it is dark. Sad.

@Kachina624 You are spot on. However if the law doesn't support punishment, the criminals are out before the cops get home to dinner. And this must be very disheartening.

It's already on record police officials saying there's no point in us going to (insert petty crime here) because nothing is done after we arrest them. Which is pitiful.

I don't think there is even much community service time done now.

@Sooner Here's an example of how dumb some of our judiciary can be. The Albuquerque Police Depart and the district attorney recently requested the tracking on several of the accused who were out on bond wearing ankle monitors, so their activity could be compared to some crimes that had been committed where they were suspects.

The request was refused because it might impinge on the privacy of the accused. Like someone on an ankle monitor has an expectation of privacy? The DA had a fit.

Sadly we have a reoccurring theme in our city of people breaking into these group community mailboxes in subdivisions all over the city.....

Unfortunately, ours was hit a couple years ago....so the post office held our mail until repairs were made and a security system installed.....Down at the post office you met all these people in line that were victims of the same situation from all over town!!! SAD!

@Kachina624 Yes we hear of that all the time. I don't know if we're not sometimes to the point that the criminal has more rights than the victim.

Just got our mail delivered.

We received our first Christmas card. It was mailed yesterday. And it was mailed from about 50 miles away. I am impressed.

I know the uptick in crime isn't limited to a few larger cities; they are just the ones that get publicized in the media .DS used to work when he was in college in a very small, upscale shopping center. He did the window display lighting /special effects. Each shop had its own, off-duty police officer who escorted customers to their cars if they purchased more than $5k in merchanise, which was almost everyone. I know they still do this and the shop owners have to pay for this security themselves to attract customers. What a sad commentary on how things have become.

When I taught in ABQ, I had MS students who had ankle monitors and would purposely wear shorts, even when it was really cold, so they could show off their monitors; a status symbol if you belonged to the right group.

DH was born and raised in Detroit. It is not the same city now as when he grew up. Same is true for so many large cities now. Very sad.

I saw a USPS mailbox so full of mail that envelopes were literally falling out of the box. Mail pickup hadn't happened for several days. Makes it pretty easy for thieves to help themselves to whatever they want.
