How Old Is Your Refrigerator?

My father has a 1950's model in the garage still working fine.

I have a Kenmore that is around 35 years old. The other, GE, is 22. An upright freezer died at age 7.

I have a Whirlpool side by side that was 27 years on this past June. Still works like a charm.

My Kenmore upright freezer is 28 years old and still works perfectly. My 18-month-old black stainless steel Samsung sidebyside fridge is a piece of !#&! and already has a broken piece of molding on the bottom under the door and has only one freezer level that works: icicles.

For all of you with older applances hold on to them. The newer ones don't last. My house was built in 2018 and the Whirlpool dishwasher died last December it was less than 3 years old. My neighbor had to replace the motor in her A/C last year. Once again less than 3years old.

@Duckncover We had an upright Kenmore freezer that we bought in 1984. I lasted through 2 moves and we never had one problem with it. Every year we would roll it out to the edge of the garage and hose it out to defrost it and then roll it back. We had to get rid of it in 2018 when we downsized. It was still working.

I painted my refrigerator last year with appliance paint because internally it still works so well. It now looks brand new.

In the process I found the serial number and traced it to a manufacturer's date of 1993. It was in the house when I bought it in 1995. So that is 28 years old. It is a GE.

My Amana central air unit I believe to be more than 35 years old, since I know that it was installed by the owner previous to the ones that I bought the house from. I had it repaired one time, 11 years ago. Every year I hold my breath, but it keeps on going. I've had to purchase two new furnaces in this time period.

Difference in workmanship - materials - computer parts = used back then and now.

My future appliance will sail to me instead of trucked from Ohio or Michigan.or South Carolina.

If you own an oldie but goodie, hang on to it. Appliances aren't made to last anymore...just not the same. There is a built-in replacement factor.

I have repair man coming tomorrow for GE dryer 6 years old and I live alone.

My other dryer with 3 teenagers lasted over 30 years.

We bought a kitchen aide in 2008. So far no problems.

I try to stir clear of any appliances like fridge, washers and dryers with computers or boards that go bad etc.

When we first got married and we bought our first house we bought a used washer and dryer for 300.00 for the set.
The brand was a Norge which I had never heard of and still dont know anyone who had that brand. But they lasted us for 24 years.
They were so old I wanted them to break down so I could get a newer set ( young and navie). First the washer went and then the dryer.
We bought a new GE washer without the agitation and it only lasted 4 years. I hated it and went back for one with the agitator with no bells and whistles.

I vowed never to part with my Kenmore Elite washer, but when it stopped working, I found out that the needed part wasn't available anymore. So I'm now the proud owner of a new Speed Queen washer. Sometimes we can't hang onto our beloved oldies, as much as we might want to. (Hoping my Kenmore fridge lasts forever.)

I had a basic Whirlpool refrigerator - which lasted 24 years - when the freezer stopped defrosting. That was 2 years ago. I bought the same Whirlpool refrigerator (this design is much better) - and the salesman said "this should last about 8 years." I paid around $700 for each. I have a smaller Danby refrigerator (from Canada) in my garage. It's around 16 years old and still going strong.
