Fingerprint reader on lap

Do you have to use the fingerprint reader on a laptop that has it or can you just sign in on it?

In case your laptop is accessible for others to use, it's a security measure supposedly.

Mine has the fingerprint reader, but I'm the only one with access to my laptop, so I don't use it, I just sign in.

@KingstonsMom I am the only person ever using my computer and I sign in when I first get it and then go in settings after that and disable asking for the sign in. We are in our 70's and my husband is not interested in using a computer. He had to use and set them at his job at his work.
I bought the TSV in the teal 15" as I will give my HP 17" to my daughter. My computer now can not upgrade to Windows 11 as I updated all Windows 10 updates today and it states it is not upgradable.

With my new MacBook, I chose to just sign in. I've had experience with fingerprint readers and they are not always reliable, so I'm leery.

At the worst times working in the hospital, the darn readers wouldn't recognize our prints. Never knew when it might happen.

Sometimes you could put your finger in water to hydrate the print and it would work. If you injured that particular finger, it may not work either. And, these were very expensive machines.

You're so right!

Mine was registered with a fingerprint on my right (dominate) hand and I broke a bone in that wrist and had no choice but to try to do the fingerprint with my left hand.

It was so frustrating trying to get that to work, a real PITA! I just couldn't seem to scroll my fingerprint using my left hand.
