STREET STYLE IN THE FORTIES

I love taking a peek at street style in the 1940's, as a window into history. What a charmingly attired young woman above.

Casual, but stylishly jaunty:

I like all the knit sweater vests guys used to sport then.

Snugly clad against cooler temps. Except for those precious little bare chunky baby legs!

Dapper.

She could be dating the guy above!

Upscale....

Different moods for different guys.

You can almost see in her glance, her concern for her serviceman love--

Fitted floral dress, pretty.

Kool kat. Wonder if this is a variation on the "zoot suit"?

Lively clothing details. I always enjoy the shoulder emphasis in Forties' clothes. Very Rosalind Russell!

And here's how a few modern dressers have incorporated Forties' elements into their contemporary looks:

From what I remember reading, the woman above is sporting mostly authentic vintage elements. I think she looks darling-- love her high-waisted tweed trousers.

See how the modern guy in the center has adapted the Forties' knit vest look.

I love the 40's styles, especially the shoes.

My mother had a few pairs in her closet when I was very young. I used to love to put them on over my shoes and walk in them.

I wish those styles would come back. Spectator shoes and cute pumps with straps...saddle shoes. Big masculine modern boots and shoes do not float my boat.

I loved every one of these @Oznell ! Thanks so much for sharing. From looking at old pics, I can see that my mom very much had that Lauren Bacall hairdo going on in the 40s.

I did that exact same thing. I have such clear memories of putting on my mothers high heels over my own little shoes.

It's such a sweet memory. I love the forties.

Oh wow that was so cool. Like looking at pictures of my parents in the 40's. My mom had some beautiful clothes. I remember her telling me she paid 40$ for a blouse from Stewarts in downtown Baltimore in the 40's and that was unheard of. It was just beautiful. She and my aunts had a lot of those fox fur collars as well. When we sold the house I grew up in, we kept the lambswool jackets with the silver fox collars. Dated, but beautiful. Also a 3/4 length mink coat. Had them cleaned by a furrier. My daughter wears the mink but said it's something you wear if you're going to be outside a while. Yep, your grandmother walked all over downtown so they needed something warm.

The vintage ladies remind me of my mother and aunts in the photos I have seen (and many of which I now possess) taken during the '40s.

Those saddle shoes hung in there as a popular item at least a decade and a bit more. Wore them in junior high and senior high.

Love the old styles and seeing vintage photos!

Have you checked "Glamourdaze" on YouTube? Lots of old video shorts through the decades from years gone by. Some are just old they they will show the same video redigitalized....amazing to see people from the early 1900s with remastered footage.

They also have a lot a beauty and social etiquette videos from the 1940s & 50s. Fun to watch!

Very flattering dresses, imo.

Love the two-toned pumps. Can't think right now of what they're called.

Nice, 'proper' styling in those days.

Worn with gloves, etc.

Thanks for those memories, even though I didn't live (or wasn't old enough to wear them) in that particular era.

I have a feeling that many women and perhaps their daughters wish that they would have saved some of those blouses and dresses.

What great photos of forties fashions!!! I am a fan of many of the looks and yes, they would work today. The shoes remind me of my mother's and I too used to walk around in them!!!!! I remember how much hats were worn and how many millinery shops in business, my mother used to go often for a new hat. I loved the look of women's pants at the time, kind of Katherine Hepburn style.

My sister and I agree the hairstyles of the forties were so nice but when the fifties came around, women's hairstyles were not flattering at all, everyone looked older.

You can still buy saddle shoes. Many parochal school uniforms include saddle shoes.
