Left Handed People…

My grandson (in his teens) just found out earlier today that his grandpa and nonnie

(nonna is Italian for grandmomma, but all the kids call me nonnie) are left handed.

My husband and I are left handed and so was my father. No one else in both families is a South Paw.

My grandson is confused after discovering this. He actually said to me this:

“why didn’t you tell me”?

Um…

I didn’t think nor did his Pops (my husband/his grandpa) was an issue.

I think he’s confused because he has our blond hair/blue eyes and other attributes, but not this.

I'm the oldest of 10 children but the only southpaw. My parents and grandparents were all right handed so I don't know of any other left handed family members

I am confused as to why grandson felt anyone had to tell him they are left handed. Being left handed is as normal as being right handed.

My mother and my youngest son are left handed. My husband has one brother who is a lefty as well.

Most families have a lefty or two, even though the majority of people in the world are right handed. There is nothing odd about that.

I was naturally left-handed, but I was "changed" by my mother and grade school teachers. I am now ambidextrous, except for a right-hand signature.

OMG ... this subject hits home ... my in-laws .. when my son started to be

left handed as a baby .. said .. you've got to change that .. make him use

his right hand .. this was a thing back then ....I was yoiung and thought

they knew better ... WRONG ... now as an adult he can hardly write well

at all ....then I realized they must have done the same with his father as

his hand writing is bad also ....

I don't understand why he is upset???? We lefties are good people! Back in the day, in school they did try and break of you writing with your left hand. It was terribly disruptive and made you feel that there were something wrong with you! I remember my mother having to go to school and really having it out with them! They changed their tune after that! But they were always after me in grade school --- hold your pencil this way, not that way --- put your tablet this way, not that way! Sheesh! I was a somewhat nervous child to begin with and this did not help! Lefties are thought to be very creative and intuitive. Being a lefty is not something to be ashamed of!!!!

Did you know that 'International Lefthanders Day' is observed annually on Aug 13th to celebrate the uniqueness and differences of left-handed individuals. My SIL is left-handed and very creative as well.

I always heard it is inherited, my husbands dad was left handed, both myself,and husband right handed, one of our sons is left handed,i don't see the big deal.

I was born left handed too. My parents made me use right hand. My middle sister and I are both ambidextrous.

My GD is left-handed. Nobody on my side is but my DDIL's sister is also left-handed. Whether it is genetic or not doesn't matter nor do I even know if that factors in with GD.

It is true years ago left-handed children were often forced to use their right hands. How humiliating.

I'd like to think so @DesertGems as I'm the leftie, my Dad was too. When I thiknk back to mom's side and both sets of Grandparents, only Dad and I are lefties. Don't know how, when, where or why but I will confirm he was a very creative mason with a good 60 years of laying brick, cement blocks, tons literally of stone work. As for me and being artistic, not so much maybe only in my head. In hs art classes, I couldn't even draw a straight line with a ruler!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OMG!!! Being left handed is not an affliction! Even to this day, when I write, people still look at me in utter amazement!

I remember back in the day, my 1st grade teacher tried her best to break me from using scissors in my left hand. It traumatized me so much that day, my mother went to the school and had a few choice words with her. Ironically, I cannot hold scissors with my left hand! So, I guess that teacher taught me well.

My son and DIL were in their kitchen discussing my 54th wedding anniversary coming this Monday. My grandson was there too when my son brought up the crazy Italian southpaw and the American southpaw being together so long. My grandson has never paid attention to which hand Pops and I favor or use. Why would he? Anyway, the poor boy (13) is going through puberty only to find out his grandparents are from another planet…or something.

@Diva on The Q I'm left handed and I cannot use left handed scissors. It's one of the few things I do right handed.

My m-i-l still does think being left handed is an affiliction and according to her all left-handers are dyslexic. When I questioned that her answer was, well you're an exception.

I remember one day, many years ago, she went to hand my niece something with her left hand and made a big production of having to correct it before my niece took it from her. That had to be one of the rudest things I ever experienced.

I am a lefty but have learned to do many things with my right hand because utensils are designed for right handed persons. Scissors, can openers, many spatulas are contoured for right handed use.

I once ordered a special left handed potato peeler and it is good but not life changing. School was difficult with the spiral notebooks and desks designed for right handed use.

I adapted and survived.
