Oneida Lake, NY

I saw Oneida Lake near Syracuse on a Lottery Dream Home episode last night. The area was beautiful and the houses affordable. My husband and I were intrigued by the area. My question is, "How are the winters?"

Winters......Lots of snow

Average snow from Lake Ontario..... 140 inches = or more

Last year = a walk in the park - 79

Yes, very cold and snowy winters but the summers and fall are spectacular! I grew up near there and love the area.

I grew up north of Oneida lake.....the Syracuse area gets some of the largest amounts of snowfall in NYS. My former sister in law, whom I am still friends with, has a home on the lake. She loves it.........winters and all. If you are retired and don't have to venture out for work, it would be a nice place to live. They also have very good health care in the region with a large physician to patient ratio. Abundant wineries in the area also.

Forgot to mention.......if you are moving from another state, check out the taxes. I believe NYS taxes are high compared to many areas.

I live minutes from Oneida Lake and a few friends have houses on the lake. I love the area. Yes we tend to get alot of snow but not every year. We don't have to worry about fires, landslides and hurricanes. I love the changing of the seasons and the wineries are awesome. There is always something to do.

I saw the original episode. I looked into it and the property taxes are the highest in the Nation! Also, the snowfall is enormous and lake access is cut off. You'll also need Homeowners insurance that is excessive since it's a flood zone. You'll pay a lot more just for the privilege than you can imagine (kind of like the Hamptons). One other thing I found out was the restrictions on altering any existing home is a nightmare. If you're seriously considering it, do your homework thoroughly.

@HonestLife You only need flood insurance if you are in the flood zone which is rare. I don't live in a flood zone so I don't need it. My homeowners is just under $500 for the year. Upstate NY and Downstate NY are two different things. Downstate where NYC, Hamptons etc are more money. Upstate NY it is very reasonable. People who live Downstate come to Upstate because it is much cheaper and can get a huge house for less money. They say everything is on sale in UPstate. As far as altering your home we don't have any restrictions. I have friends who have had additions on their house and only need a permit to do it. So if you are comparing Downstate to Upstate they are not apples to apples.

@HonestLife @Pecky Pecky is right. No comparison to upstate and downstate NY. They are completely different. I am as southern N.Y. as you can get, right on the NJ border. Our taxes are high. We do not need flood insurance as we are not in a flood zone, that would be parts of Long Island. NY is a big state with differences in all parts. Pecky needs to do her research for the area she seeks. ETA, we have close friends in the Adirondacks and their homes are cheap compared to ours, schools smaller, taxes cheaper.
