The fact that Phil Everly died of COPD brought back painful memories of my mother's lingering heart and lung disease and slow death. One of my brothers had the same fate but much quicker.

I hated seeing them on a Merv Grffith TV Show interview and all of them with cigarettes dangling out of their mouths and off their fingers.

I don't consider their generation (my generation) stupid, just ignorant, for smoking. I do consider anyone under 45 or so who started smoking as doing a very stupid thing.

I do consider myself blessed or just lucky that I never started and so never had to go through quitting.

So as not to derail the Everly Bros. thread further, perhaps we could post our thoughts on smoking here insteadl

Meant as a friendly gesture not a control gesture.

Personally, I know for a fact what smoking can do to your body. I have told the story of my mother and her twin many times.

I am sorry about your dear Mother. And I agree smoking is bad and I quit years ago and it was thee hardest thing I ever did! (I ate the entire kitchen while quitting). On the other hand my dad smoked his whole life and never had an illness or died from smoking. He died in a nursing home from kidney failure after a fall because the home was neglectful in spite of me (who was not in charge) reporting them calling for help etc. I am convinced my dad would otherwise still be here. Also, my grandfather smoked too and he died during hip surgery. Both were in their mid 80s. I did however have a cousin who died at 59 of lung cancer. So I am not debating smoking is good, it is bad. Some people just luck out.

My dad was a serious smoker - Camels. Died at 42.

It's not just the smoker who risks his/her life, it's the people who live with them. I'm sure I'll take a hit on this stance. Smoke around your loved-ones, subject them to second hand smoke, and they can die of lung cancer. I've seen it happen more than once.

I smoked many years ago. Fortunately, I never even have one iota of a notion to ever smoke cigarettes again. Plus, I have asthma anyway so it was good that I quit. At the time, doc said I was on my way to emphysema so I had to stop.

I do have a very hard time tolerating smoke and make every effort to avoid it. People can be really rude, SOMETIMES, and seem to think that their right to smoke however and wherever they want overrides everybody else's right to breathe.

I've had workers in my house who I very specifically told that smoking is not allowed in my house, only to get home from work and smell it strongly enough in my house that it didn't just waft in. Needless to say, I was very pi ss ed. Plus, I have a bird. He doesn't need to be breathing that stuff. Then, when you say something to them about it, they just look at you like YOU are the jerk. Ya can't win with some folks.

I've seen somebody die of lung cancer. It's not a pretty death. Lot of suffering.

On the (kind of) funny side - One time I saw a car in a parking lot and this car had kind of a recessed dash board (it was a long time ago) and the guy had been using the dashboard as an ashtray for, apparently, a VERY long time. It was really nasty. That's one bigass ashtray!

No one in my immediate family or circle of friends smokes, and I'm grateful for that. I'm also very annoyed at all the people who park their cars in front of my house (I assume they're on their way to visit people who don't allow smoking) and throw their butts out the window for me to clean up. My impression of smokers is...they just aren't very clean people.

My sister-in-law smokes like a chimney ... always has from the time I met her. Her husband, a nonsmoker who quit smoking for 30 years, was diagnosed with lung cancer and died within three months of diagnosis. She's still smoking and is pathetically thin after breast cancer surgery.

She can't stay at our home anymore when she visits from out of town because she sneaks and smokes even though I've told her not to do it.

Smokers are going to find a way to do it regardless of the rules. My office building used to have smoking and non-smoking break rooms. Those don't work, of course, because the smoke and odor whoosh out when the door is opened. Then the building banned smoking within the building so they went down to the Fed Ex and supply loading area, the downstairs reserved parking area or the patio for outside dining or hung around the doorways. don't work in that building anymore (thank goodness) but my former colleagues tell me the smokers have been told to stay out of the covered parking are and stay away from the entrances and patio. It really doesn't help too much. The other issue with smokers at work is they take a whole lot more breaks than anyone else. They take a lunch and coffee breaks like everyone else but then they're MIA a lot because they're outside smoking.
