Tipping at Derm Spa

I have a question. I go periodically to a "Spa" attached to my derms office. I have laser treatments on my rosacea which costs hundreds of dollars each time. I go for three treatments every several years.

They also provide other treatments there such as Botox, Juvaderm and facials. They also sell products and make up.

They are very busy.

This time I noticed small brown envelopes by the desk. I have seen them before.

Are you expected to tip for medical treatments? Or would they be for those providing non medical treatments? I don't have a clue.

Ask the receptionist, get a suggested range, and I wouldn't tip more than $20 in any case.

My derms office also has a Spa. Does the Dr perform the services? My appointments are for facials and peels and not performed by a Dr. I do tip. I would check with the front desk.

Is this a non-medical procedure? If so, I would tip 20% like I do for my hair or anything else.

The laser is operated by a woman in Scrubs. I assume she is a nurse or someone highly trained. She has been there for years and does a great job.

Because of the high prices of the services....the tip would amount to $300 or more. Something to think about before you go....

Since rosacea is a medical condition, the red light laser treatment is for a medical condition. I woul not tip. When I had the red light laser treatment, it was covered under my insurance.

This is a pulse dye laser...and it has never been suggested that insurance would cover it. I truly cannot remember asking but I am sure I did when I started having these treatments. I wish it were.

I thought of asking the desk...but I figured they would say something along the lines of it 'being up to me, if I want to show my appreciation'...I doubt they would say no, don't tip.

So instead I asked here..figuring others might have the same question.

I also go for periodic laser treatments at a laser treatment center run by derms. It's not a spa. There is a separate cosmetics counter inside, too, but it's not operated by the derms. The laser procedures vary from purely cosmetic to medical. My treatments are cosmetic but they are performed by a derm so I do not tip.

I would not tip but I've never been in that situation. Calling them is opening the door to tell you how to tip and then you will feel obligated.

I'd let it go. But you do what you feel is right for you.

@ I think it's appropriate to tip for spa services except when provided by a physician.

@wonderfulworld Scrubs are not an indication of a professional or how much training they have...they are required by OSHA, Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Scrubs are usually required in any situation where medical procedures are provided. They assure that the area and person are more sterile than wearing their street clothing.

The important thing is that she does a good serice for you. IMO, a spa service is similar to a hairstylist...20% is the custom, but certainly up to you.

@millieshops The charge/cost of the services goes to the medi-spa, the tips go directly to the one who provides the service.
