I've read a few Nicholas Sparks, don't think I want to go to 50 shades type of book, but I don't know what a good story to read would be.

If it's like Alaska, or the old travels across the plains by the pioneers, could be fun. Any recommendations? Please?

I like Sandra Dallas quite a bit. The Diary of Mattie Spenser is about homesteaders and, while not a traditional romance, it is about relationships. A lot of her stories take place in Colorado in the 1800's. I've read about 5 or 6 of her books, and there's not a one I didn't like.

If you've not read The Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon, then that's a great place for romance/adventure. I still have the last to read and I need to get on the ball before then next comes out. The series is also being filmed now.

I haven't read a romance book in ages and ages.. Got a Nook and found an author Jennifer Ryan-- She has a series ""The Hunted"" I have now read each one TWICE... (in the last 6 weeks)... The story I can't get out of my mind is ""Lucky Like US""

Now someone else might read this and say it is ""ok"" -it just struck something in me and I just loved the characters... ..If you try it-- I hope you enjoy it as much as I did

If you like some old romance novels with a lot of the early west, Indians, wagon trains, and great writing, with good accurate history, find some old books by Roseanne Bittner. There are not many early Americana as steeped in proper history with romance as well-written as hers.

Some great titles that come to mind are Full Circle, Shameless, Song Of The Wolf, Thunder On The Plains, and a trilogy that begins with Mystic Dreamers. She wrote a Savage Destiny Indian Series that was very interesting. Now these books were written back in the 1990's, and I don't know if they are still around or not in reprint. you might could fin them in used book stores or eBay or in any book search. Also, another writer of that time that also wrote beautiful and captivating Old West romances was Madeline Baker. She wrote excellent books as well. These were written in the late 90's and very early 2000. Some great titles I recall are Spirit Song, The Spirit Path, Lakota Love Song, Lacey's Way, Unforgettable, and others.

Of course, there are many more newer authors and titles you shouldn't miss either. One of my old, all-time favorites is Whitney, My Love by Judith McNaught. Most terrific historical romance. All of her books are fabulous but now she writes modern suspense books. You HAVE to read all books by Nora Roberts, Linda Howard, Sandra Brown, Anne Stuart, Sharon Sala,Elizabeth Lowell, Linda Lael Miller, Robyn Carr, Jude Devereaux, Karen Robards and Julie Garwood. These ladies all began writing historical romances but now write modern fiction. That way you can read in either direction to find what style you like best, but they are the preeminent, best-selling authors. Well, I think that's enough from me to get you started, I could go on long enough for this post to be a novel. As you can see, I'm very passionate about books ! I'm a long time inveterate bibliophile who would rather read that eat !!

(By the way, all book titles are always supposed to be underlined when in print, but if I do that in this text it will look very crowded and messy, so I'm purposely omitting that feature in hopes it will be easier to read.)

Well, with all of us suggesting our favorites, I hope you find some wonderful reads to enjoy your summer days with, and never hesitate to ask(especially me) about other books.

Please give your honest opinions about any I suggest because if you don't like them it's okay, I have about 500,000 in mind I can put you onto next !

Happy Reading !!

I totally agree with the list of authors in the previous post. Linda Lael Miller has written some historical romances about pioneer days, such as Lily and the Major, Caroline and the Raider, and Emma and the Outlaw. There are more and they are all good. That book came out as a secular romance a very long time ago and it was a very good book with a strong romance in it, but it was based loosely on the book of Hosea from the Bible, it is one of the finest redemption romances I've ever read. After her unbelievable success, Ms. Rivers was "born again" and begin writing stunning novels for Thomas Nelson Publisher of Christian books, fiction stories.

If you read Redeeming Love in the original secular form, it's very different than the Christian form, although it's still a good story.

Another singular good read is Lina Howard's "Prey". But one of the best books you'll ever read regardless of any type of book you normally like, is "Memoirs of a Geisha" by Arthur Golden. Everyone who ever has read a book should read this one. An unbelievable interesting read that should not be missed!

Well, that's a lot for now. I have my opinions like all of you do. But I promise all I have named here are good, just as Diana Gabaldon's "Outlander" was. I also liked Jean Auel's "Clan of The Cave Bear" stories.

Debbie Macomber's Midnight Sons books are about Alaska and are very good.

Oh yes ! Those Linda Lael Miller's were wonderful, loved all of her historicals ! Have read all of her books except her last few modern suspense books.

Have any of you read Tempted by Robyn Carr? It's how I discovered her back in October of 1987. I wondered "who is this unknown wonderful author?" Couldn't find any other books, had to wait for her to write. Been reading her ever since, but she certainly has changed her writing style with the Christian books. Tempted was very hot and great ! I still like to read it again every few years ! Back in 1987 Danielle Steel endorsed it and said it was one of her very best....it was !

How about these golden oldies? Grand authors:

Julie Garwood

Judith McNaught

Karen Robards

Jude Deveraux

Sandra Brown

Linda Howard

Bertrice Small

Catherine Coulter

Nora Roberts

Amanda Quick

Susan Johnson

Johanna Lindsey

Debbie Macomber

LaVyrle Spencer

Pamela Morsi (funny!)

Oh my gosh, such wonderful hours of reading, and so, so many more !

Who can dig up from the past that you can't forget ???

The series is also being filmed now.

Get cracking, only 10 more days until Written in my own hearts blood is out.
