Power Outages Just Waiting!

Don't know what is worse being informed of outages or bam all power gone.

Last month we had 6 power outages with no warnings and today as we have winds through 5 p.m, tomorrow warnings of power outages occurring don't know when though.

Granddaughter just arrived with baby - she lives 10 miles away - her power gone needs to shower ready for work at 2 p.m. here we go again........

With that many power outages I would seriously consider getting a generator. JMHO!!

@dulwich Is this weather related or a grid problem? I am sorry that you are dealing with outages. They seem to be happening more frequently in my part of the world as well. They are especially troublesome as we get more and more dependent on technology.

@kaydee50 Yes we have generator sitting in garage on waiting list for installation!

Walking down our road is like 'Generator City' when power gone all you can hear are generators. Hopefully ours will be in soon.

We just priced a whole house generator and it was around $14,000. Many families where we live have this specific type due to the type of floorplans we have and the fact AC is simply needed due to where we are located. The thing is, others have said (this is via our FB page) that they have NEVER had a need for it in the 15,20, 25 years they've lived here as the power comes back on after a few hours or so.

Still......hot is still hot.

We're looking a portable one that can go with us from house to house. South to North, etc. We've lost power due to hurricanes/snow back East for 1-2 weeks and paid a HUGE price for not have a generator. With the weather going the way it is, I think it's simply a smart investment for anyone.

@rockygems123 Oh, so this would be the preemptive outages because of fire danger? That explains it. I was confused because we have power grid problems in my neck of the woods.

I don't know about preemptive - too much sun - power out, some wind - power out, and one of the best last month 'squirrel chewed wire' our neighborhood awaits what will be cause of next outage - very frustrating!

But we have had our share of fires/evacuations and definitely do not want that experience again.

I purchased those light bulbs that work when the power goes and I LOVE them. Last time the power went I was so happy I bought them....bought my SIL a set too. Lights working all over the house...outside too. Great product.

We purchased a 22 KW Generac 3 years ago and have never looked back. It is a whole house generator so I am never without anything when the power goes off. I can even do laundry; nothing changes. Don't even know that it is out as it only takes 15 seconds for it to automatically turn on.

Well worth the price to have piece of mind knowing you are covered.

I think it's always nice to be forewarned if the power may go down. It offers an opportunity to have everything charged, and meals planned.

@Etoile308 Aah but last month we had no pre warnings - lots of talk on t.v. about outages but now it appears no warnings just blackout.

@silkyk Which lights are you talking about?

@dulwich Blackouts must be a pain. We don't lose power here often, I'm not sure about winter though. We do have crazy winds here All The Time. But I don't think we're allowed to have whole house generators, I've never seen one on someone's property. We need to look into that though. We plan on moving here full time. We do have a gasoline powered generator, but the luxury of a whole house would be awesome. You're lucky you have one.

I don't believe that would affect any generators but lawn movers, weed eaters? What are people going to do?

@FiddleDeeDee This is in no way meant to be snarky but when you wrote "still...hot is hot". You know, air conditioning is a fairly recent invention in the history of humans. Look at all the people in Africa who don't have air conditioning. When I was in school before college, none of our schools were air cobditioned and we didn't start summer vacation til mid June (and didn't go back til after Labor Day.) I sat through all that school with no air conditioning. My siblings and I had fans in our bedrooms; our house did not have central air conditioning. (I grew up in the 50s and 60s). So living without air conditioning, esp for a short while, is do-able. (And yes, hot).

@FiddleDeeDee We have a portable one. It's older as it is pretty loud. Runs on gas. Most of the six or so houses in the area have whole house ones. Even though ours is portable it runs the whole house. We have a well so need water. Does the job.

Where we live there are very few power outages. Some are caused by the weather, others by as little as a vehicle destroying certain power equipment.

I live in Nebraska, and unlike cities and coastal states, our power grid is capable of handling the loads placed upon them. And 1 coastal state doesn't have to deal with what we call, "winter weather", yet seem to always have either outages, or a shortage of power.

Guess maybe you may live in one of those states, and/or specific cities.

Funny we're talking about generators as DH just decided to get one. He bought a portable generator & had an electrician come over yesterday to upgrade the system to handle the generator. He seems very happy.

Anyway we really don't get outages often. We did get a mystery outage in July. I say mystery since there was no storm and the power suddenly went out for five hours. Yet DH just wanted the piece of mind.

Our new generator will cover the refrigerators, gas (for heat & stove) and some electricity such as lights & TV in family room. It will not cover AC but it doesn't get unbearable here. The hottest is usually in the 90s for several days in a row.
