Removing permanent marker blobs from a shirt

I managed to get a good sized permanent black marker spots on a favorite top. Have you tried anything that seemed to work if this has happened to you? I did try purify spot removal spray and let it sit but it did not work. All suggestions welcome

I will follow this thread on the chance that someone answers with a success story, but I think the name PERMANENT marker has already answered your question.

I have faced this challenge in the past with no success.

I did a search on the phrase how to remove permanent marker from clothing and got many returns for websites and some youtube videos.

I did not further investigate since it appears they type of fabric and color plays a part in what will work.

@gellen. I do know there are Norwex products that can remove permanent marker from walls and flooring. I did see it demonstrated a few years ago. I don't know about fabrics, however, they do have a laundry detergent on their site. Maybe they have a help line or something.

@gellen - This happened to me years ago and someone recommended Simple Green. I can't even remember what material the top was, but I sprayed it on, rubbed it in, and let it sit for a while before rinsing it out. Then I washed it. It was my first experience with Simple Green, and I have used it ever since.

As others have said, I would be careful. A lot depends on your fabric. And it might be too strong for it.

Type in How to remove black permanent marker out of clothes.I have used alcohol and paper towel to blot ink out of carpet. I have also removed ink from a apron.

Dry Cleaners have products to remove just about anything.

Thanks for all your suggestions. I had googled and will try some of the products suggested. Of course this doesn’t happen when you are wearing a favorite top and not your old clothes 😠

Check out Amos Shock It Clean on HSN. Supposedly "breaks down the molecular structure" and doesn't contain any harsh chemicals. He did a demo where the product broke down paint and removed it. I just ordered this product.

I second this. That would be my first move. Don't try to fix and then take it, take it there first. They worked a miracle for me on a brand new cream coloured jacket. LM

My mom swore by hairspray. Somehow hairspray removed the black ink from my dad's cotton shirts.

Not sure if a sharpie would be different though.

When I was teaching I would use a spritz of non-aerosol hairspray to get out ballpoint ink and some permanent ink...just depended on the fabric and the marker, but is worth a try. Spritz, then blot with a tissue....no water....until it come off..may take more than one try. Make sure not to use aerosol hairspray.

I have had good luck with blue Dawn for removing oily spots, and even permanent marker. At one time a guy in my writer's group dropped his blue pen on my favorite peach bermudas. I tried alcohol, all kinds of removers, but Dawn did it for me. I soak the spot, rub it in, and then wash as usual. It's worth a try, and it's cheap.

I'll give the disclaimer that this may not be applicable to all fabrics. However, I had an accident with a Sharpie and a sofa. Rubbing alcohol removed it easily. Rubbing alcohol also removes sharpie from walls and countertops (cannot even tell where it was).

And no, there isn't an out of control child with markers in the house. I'm just a clumsy adult 🤦‍♀️

My problem is the opposite. Have a beautiful rose pink blouse made in Indonesia (I just checked). It has buttons down the front and I haven't worn it in years.

Since reading this Thread I thought it would be a great idea to see what would work. It has a white spot on one side which I believe is Clorox. I have a habit of not paying attention to what I'm wearing when I clean. After reading these Posts I thought the colored Sharpie might work, but I realize that if I were to sew rose pink lace on either side it might work better for me.

I'll remember to try alcohol for the walls.

I second the hairspray idea. It definitely works on ink but I haven't tried it on permanent marker.
