Has Anyone Ever Shipped a Car?

You can ship in a closed or open trailer or use a driveaway service to have someone drive the car to your destination.

I was a driveaway driver when I was young. I know people who have used closed carriers for speciality cars and open trailers for daily drivers.

Yes, we shipped two cars across country when we moved a few years ago. They went on an open carrier and arrived in excellent condition. The cost at that time was about $275 per car. We have said it was the best way to send cars. I would do it again in a minute. No worries at all. Good luck.

I've done it several times.

Most recently, I shipped my car through shipacardirect.com. My daughter had previously used this company to ship her car from the West Coast to the East Coast. I was doing the same, just to a different location. Cost was about $1200.

you can fill out your info on their website to get a quote.

They use very big carriers, so driving down residential streets probably wouldn't work. For pickup and drop off, I had to meet them at a nearby commercial area (such as the back parking lot of Walmart)

Your dealership can help you with this, as well. We've shipped vehicles when moving from state to state a couple of times.

My mom hired a driver to drive her convertible to FL since she had two at the time she purchased her condo in Tampa for winters. That also allowed her to have him transport many of her personal belongings and kitchen items with him safely and economically.

Yes, several times. We used the same company that did our cross country move. It went smooth with no issues.

When we moved from NJ to SC they loaded my corvette on the moving truck. Arrived fine no scratches, dings, etc.

Yes, we've done it twice and I'm about to do it a third time. First time was from NJ to California. I used an auto shipper in NJ. Choose to have my car placed on top. Don't want oil spills from other vehicles. This was in 2000 and the cost was about $1000 to $1500. Moved from California to GA and had to transport 2 vehicles but these 2 vehicles were different in that one was a restored 1969 corvette and mint condition 2006 VW Bug, both convertibles. So, they were transported inside a carrier. Much like your belonging when moving. For this shipment of cars, the person really had to know what he was doing and it all went smoothly. Cost, in 2016, about $5000. My Mom had moved and did not have a lot of stuff (furniture, etc)...she sold just about all of it. But she wanted to keep her small Honda. The moving company said her Honda would fit into the moving truck and it would cost her a lot less than an auto shipper. Research auto shippers, read reviews, inform your insurance company (make sure you're covered). Don't leave anything inside your car when shipped. Take pictures of your car and note any dinges or scratches (they'll do that with you too when they pick up the car and you both sign). Get everthing in writing. As I said, we need to ship a car to us and I've asked my husband if he kept the paperwork. If he finds it, I'll post that company for you. There are some that are nationwide. The one we used from California to GA where nationwide and they were excellent.

You see the carriers loaded with cars regularly on 95. The "snowbirds" keep the trucks busy hauling cars to and from Florida.

I have but can't remember who or how much it was. The car arrived pretty quick with no issues (scratches, etc).

@september , that was exactly my experience too. I shipped my car from MA to CA, and the cost was $1200. It was so worth it!

Daughter shipped hers from SC to WA. She sold all her furniture & used POD, very easy. She had called several movers/haulers & costs were all comparable. PODs referred some haulers to her. Cost was little lower. She went with one of them. Like another poster mentioned she requested top layer. The pick up & delivery dates/times were right on time. Went very smoothly & only for having to UBER over to a Walmart parking lot she was very pleased. Just needed to get to a carwash asap as it was dusty & had some dried up bugs on it!!
