Broke a CFL lightbulb.....

I cleaned it up.... THEN saw what I should have done! Whoops! I did it all wrong! Hope I do not die... These bulbs may save energy, but they are a toxic waste mess if you break one! Oh well.....I just screwed in the replacement bulb.... What the heck, I am being vaporized in mercury vapors as we speak....... Too late now.

In California it says on the packaging of CFL lightbulbs, you are suppose to leave the house and call the EPA to clean it up.

I hear that's how the government plans on cutting costs in the new AHC. Most people will bite the dust within 3 months of breaking one of these new mandated light bulbs. And voila! One less person to insure!

I was suppose to leave the room for an hour..... I am doing the canary test right now as my birds are in this room. So far they are still alive and well!

Who needs 'death panels' when you have lethal light bulbs?

Edited to add that in my experience these new bulbs last longer than the old type, at least so far. I haven't had one burn out since I put them in years ago.

I'm sure they will have a hotline all set up for that. Can't you just imagine, you break a bulb, call them and all these men show up in hazmat suits and their plastic tents and tunnels like in E.T. while you're sitting on your couch drinking coffee, and all your neighbors are wondering if you have aliens.

And with the increased cost of these light bulbs maybe it will cover the cost of all the EPA cleanups. Perhaps there will even be a slush fund to help cleanup all those oil spills and stuff.

That's EXACTLY what I picture happening!!

No way would I call anyone to clean up a broken light bulb. That's what I have a hubby for.

I'm in California and just went to look at the package of CFL bulbs I have. They say "If a CFL should break in your home, please visit www.energystar.gov website under clean-up guidelines for proper clean up instructions." Nothing at all about calling the EPA on either the packaging or in the clean up instructions.

That's what is printed on the package of my bulbs too. But I purchased mine at a Costco in Wisconsin.
