Got a Washing Machine finally

Not what I wanted and not a Samsung. It's a GE. Seems very nice. And it wasn't over $1,000.00 like the Speed Queen. But I'm OK with it. Mostly it was my husband's choice. He wanted a decent machine at a lower price and it was on sale. They'll be here this Saturday (free delivery) and they will haul away the old one. (for 20.00 bucks) It had a decent good rating. More narrow then I'm used to. Maytag and Whirlpools are the wider ones. But it is deeper. It's top loader agitator. Hoping to get 10 years out of it. It's ranked #5. So it doesn't seem that too bad. Debating if we should get the warranty. Usually we don't. But it's been 20 years since we got our Maytag and I don't know how long these more modern machines last. And we got this from Home Depot. Which seems to have a ton of washers and dryers. Had no idea.....

Get the warranty! You will thank your lucky stars when it needs to be repaired two years from now. I never buy an extended warranty on anything except a washing machine.

The warranty is a good idea. I get them for as long as they allow. You can't go without a washer. So if it breaks you have no choice but to get it fixed if you don't want to buy one again. The store warranty says they'll come out and fix it.

If you have a great affordable plumber/handyman who can repair your machine with no problem, that'd be a reason to maybe forgo a warranty IMO.

I got my replacement ( a May Tag) in exchange for my 8 mth old Whirlpool that had motherboard problems; it was delivered today and I'm already on load 3 (2 more to go). Don't even think about not getting warranty (Lowes transferred my old warranty that still has 4 and a half yrs on it). Not an extended warranty person but do get them on washers, dryers and dish washers ( and always use them).

WOW! Just this morning I spent several hours online looking at washers as I will be buying one within the month. NEVER, EVER, NEVER would I have considered buying an extended warranty!

(My current washer and dryer were purchased in 1989!! My dryer is still going strong, working great; the washer just started leaking, so I'm listening to the powers that be BEFORE I have a tubful of water on the floor! Plus the new ones should be waaay more energy efficient.)

Apparently my hope that a new one will last another 32 years is just foolishness. ROFLMAO at myself!

songbird--I see you purchased at HD. Where was this listed as #5 as I still am choosing between two washers.

I don't fully trust GE. Truth is I never had one. One of the few brands I never had. So I think we will take the warranty I think it will be worth it. I'll be doing a normal wash, since I always do my usual wash on Saturdays. And it's coming this Saturday. I saw lots and lots of front loaders. More then the top loaders. They all look thick and wide. They may be the way of the future. I just heard that they don't clean very well.

I now have a Hotpoint washer since 2014 that I absolutely adore, it is the lower end from GE. No bells and whistles just a nice machine that does what I need it to do.

Sorry, that doesn't make any sense. GE is one of the oldest companies out there.

Oh the rumors, the front load don't clean very well. They all operate the same, you put your detergent in, close the door and water comes in and it washes your clothes.

That's nice that Home Depot is taking care of you and scheduling the delivery for this Saturday, usually their schedule goes out a week or so.

I'm sure you'll enjoy it. You have a new washer now, make sure you read the direction and do not put more detergent in than it requires, these washers are different than 20 years ago.

@BeeChee : Don't get your heart set on one machine; often what's online or even on the floor ( display model only) isn't really available. Last week when I went to Lowes to replace my wonky Whirlpool, using my criteria ( American made, with agitator, has a tech in my rural area who know how to repair and can get parts) there were many machines that weren't really available. They had to check if it was in the warehouse and could be delivered within a week. The Maytag I bought was a floor display and actually required a manager' s approval to sell it to me ( they don't usually, can you imagine what the appliance area would like if there were only 3-4 machines). Take your notes, set your priorities but be prepared to settle.

I would suggest reading ALL the fine print in the extended warranty. And be aware that they go to great lengths to deny you. We no longer by any such warranties; it's just not worth the time, trouble, and exasperation.

I completely agree. Extended warranty is very necessary for modern washing machines! I think @River Song is right about the expectation to need service in 2-3 years. You'll get 10 years of service from the new Samsung, but doubtful you won't need a repair or replacement part. Worth the money.

The 5 year warranties are reasonably priced (u do lose the 1 yr mfr warranty.) Years ago I didn't buy warranties - but I now do on washers/dryers. Dryers are more reliable - but if I had to call a repairman for washer or dryer -- it's very expensive.

Years ago, I didn't buy warranties --- but the last 10 yrs, I bought warranties on washers/dryers. It paid off as I did have to call the repairman - for the washers. Not for the dryers. Warranties cost very little now - and it's worth it. Big appliances don't last like they did years ago.

I much prefer Lowes.

Leaking washers may be caused by build-up of sediment in the hose. Read ur brochure or check on-line for why it's leaking. May be a small repair. Repairmen are very expensive - best to buy warranties on washers/dryers. Washers should last around 5 to 10 yrs max.

I only buy top loaders and never had a mold or bad smell problem.

I bought my townhouse in 1997 and the builder provided all GE appliances. They were all low end basic models and I got a lot of years out of each them. The washer and dryer were still working at 25 years when I upgraded to the Speed Queens (and wish I hadn't waited so long to do that).

The refrigerator lasted 15, the dishwasher 20. I finally just replaced the oven at 22 years because I wanted a double oven and a glass top. It worked just fine, I just felt like I deserved a new one.

I replaced the refrigerator with another GE as I am limited in the size and space (and funds at the time). I would like to replace it as it's a bit loud, now that I'm working from home I hear it all day long, but it works just fine.

I'm going on my 3rd washing machine in only 7 years! Had a top of the line Samsung...broke. Bougtht a Maytag, mainly because its American made and made in my state (just 2 years ago) and currently my washer has sprung a leak. Got the Maytag because it was cheap, I'll never get a mid grade one again! I'm looking into Electrolux now, It has a 5 star rating!

I had a GE washer and dryer, gave both away after 32 years, still working. bought a newer model and have had them 3 years. Never buy a waranty and I never have had repairs ever.

By the way, the model I got was the floor model. I noticed the price tag on it was taken out after we agreed to buy it. They had just about every brand, except for Speed Queen! We were supposed go to Lowes after Home Depot. But husband decided this is what he wanted.

Per the warranty....again my husband and I disagree. He never takes warranties and I'm worried it won't last another 20 years (ha ha) Since he bought it. Then no warranty. Oh well. We got the delivery quickly because it was quiet in there! Very few customers. We were the only ones in the Appliance department. So we got served right away. Home Depot is strange place. Huge with no frills, etc. Really an enormous building. Just tools every where. I don't think I was ever there before. Just everything under the sun was there.
