Washing Machine queston

Our old washing machine has had it. The ball bearings on the motor have worn down. We need a new one. We are looking for 4 cubic feet and up machine. There is a Samsung 5 cubic feet one that we like. Anyone ever have this? Lots of LG models too. My husband doesn't like their products, but they seem OK to me. Anyone have one of those? They don't offer Speed Queen or Kenmore. We tried the Kenmore (used to be Sears) but they are very expensive and no free delivery. We want free delivery and haul away old washer. Our price range is $600.00 to $750.00. We prefer a top loader. Front loaders have a rep for not cleaning clothes well. Stores we've tried are Best Buy and Home Depot.

We've had GE washer/dryers for the past 20+ years without a problem. Bought them at Home Depot.

I saw the GE at Home Depot. We're thinking of that and the Samsung. I would have liked the Kenmore (remember getting a washing machine at Sears when you were a kid?) but you have to buy online now. Sight unseen. With no free delivery.

@songbird I completely agree about the front loaders. I would carry my laundry down to the river and hit it on the rocks before I would have one. When we moved into our home down south, there was a brand new front loading washer and dryer. I called St. Mathews house and had them come get them. I bought a Whirlpool top loading washer and dryer from Lowes. I really like them and that has been 7 years. The only complaint I have with the newer models is that you can't let a load soak. If you stop the process, they immediately drain. I have a Kenmore up north that is probably 25 years old. I can soak a "bleach" load as long as I like without disrupting the cycle. I am taking good care of that dinosaur .

My advice is read the reviews! Also, one other side note - we had an appliance repairman in to fix our stove. I asked him about brands, specifically the good and bad. He said that if everyone bought GE, he would be out of a job.....and no he was not affiliated with an appliance store. Take it for what it's worth. Good luck!

@songbird My daughter bought a LG when they moved into new house, top of line, died in 3 years. Repairman said it would take more to fix than a new one. Also could not regulate the amount of water used.

Bought a Whirlpool non agitator 8 mths ago and Lowes is picking it up today to exchange for an agitator May Tag. In these troubled times I am sticking with made in America (parts availability). I've had Samsung and LG appliances in past with no issues but Appliance department at Lowes said do not buy Samsung ( bad track record and can't be repaired in my rural community).

What's wrong with Maytag? The price you gave won't get too many Samsung and LG's as they have more "smart features." If you want to keep it simple, buy a simple washing machine like a GE or a Maytag. Maybe even a Whirlpool @songbird .

Either add $$ to what you'll spend or you'll be stuck with the brands I just mentioned based on your stated limit to spend.

I have a 10 yr old Speed Queen. The brand new Consumer Reports rates washing machine brand reliability. SQ #1 , LG is #2, GE is #8, Whirlpool and Kenmore tied at #11, Samsung is #20. I would not buy any Samsung appliance.

What I loved about the Kenmore was detailed types of washes it did. One for blankets, etc. I wanted to get a Speed Queen but having trouble find one. I just wanted to try something different this time.

The days of washing machines, or for that matter any appliances, lasting 20 years on average, are long gone. When we bought our last washer and dryer, (actually we bought all new kitchen appliances) we were told by the owner of the appliance store, we'd be extremely lucky to get 10 years of use out of any of them.

@lulu1it's called planned obsolescence.

Especially cellular phones other electronic gadgets. I don't want an "electronic washing machine." I hope we don't get stuck with them as other model types disappear. I don't need to set it from an app. GE, Whirlpool, Maytag without the fancy stuff that won't cost of $1,000. That's what the new fangled Samsung and LG stuff costs. I'm looking at prices right now.

@songbird I am not sure where you are getting this info but we researched very carefully and went with a front loader-Whirlpool Duet.

We found in our research that the front loaders do clean better and also spin out more water, making your dryer more efficient.

Also consider the lesser amount of water the front end loader uses.

It's your choice, of course, but I suggest you read reviews of any and all washers you are interested in buying.

Most of the companies such as Maytag, Whirlpool, etc. have bought into each other so parts from one company may be put in the machines of another brand.

DS has an LG front loader washer and they have had no problems with it for quite a few years, now.

Samsung is great for phones and TV's but their refrigerator of only 2 years broke down with a problem known to Samsung.

I would never in this life have another agatator-less washing machine. It twisted clothes into a tight rope, could not wash king sheets, and was off balance during most of the loads and had to go dig around in it.

We have had top load LG since 2016 and so far love them. We have a laundry room and can leave the washer door open, and it's pretty dry here not too humid, so we haven't had problems with smells.

I love not having to lean over and dig the clothes out.

@songbird Speed Queen is only sold by local independent appliance stores. Go to the Speed Queen site and look for " Where to Buy". Enter your zip code for a dealer close to you.

Speed Queens do last 20- 25 years. The others may last 5 or 8 years now, many parts are just plastic.

As far a bending to load/unload a front end, there are platforms (DH made ours).

I have no problem and I have a back issue.

You still have to front load any dryer anyway - are there top loading dryers?

I have never seen one.

I've had a Whirlpool Duet front load washer and dryer for nine years. The washer cleans clothes just fine, as well as any top load washer I've owned. The dryer has never given me one bit of trouble.

The washer was fine for the first two years, then started giving a door lock error code. Had the door lock mechanism replaced, twice. This washer has two computer boards in it and I've had the boards replaced several times. This washer is definitely finicky. The best thing I ever did was buy the extended warranty!

The extended warranty ran out and the washer still has occasional tantrums with the door lock. I'm pretty sure its not the door lock mechanism but the computer boards that are being tempermental. And sometimes the washer doesn't complete the cycle and I have to start it again. I'm not paying a repair man to replace the computer boards again because that would cost me as much as a new washer. So, I'm nursing the washer along until I can afford to buy a new one. I wouldn't hesitate to buy a front load washer again but would get the pedestals, less bending down.

The first question should be, who has the best service. You can have the greatest machine on the market but if you don't have the "support" what good is it? Service does not necessarily mean it doesn't work, it means that there might be a tiny bit of fine tuning that needs to be done and when will these people come to look at it/fix it even under warranty.

The second question is how much do I want to spend

The third question is that you want a top loader and will I be able

to reach down to the bottom of the machine and retrieve my clothes.

Sounds silly but I didn't check that and I have to really stretch to reach down to get those small items. I do have a step stool but I think to myself, why didn't I check something like that when I was at the store.

You have the rest, will they pick up and take away my old unit.

Will they deliver to free. When can they deliver or do I have to wait weeks. I know you don't have time but the best time and best deal to buy appliances is Black Friday week.

I have a Whirlpool Cabrio HE washer and dryer and I absolutely HATE the washer, can't wait for it to die!

Besides no soak cycle possible, I have to wash every half a load with a second rinse to get anything clean.

The only other option is to use the 'bulky', setting, in which case it adds more water to the load, but it doesn't spin them out enough, you have to use a second 'spin and drain' cycle.

Anything I may be doing to save water is dwarfed by the energy usage at this point.

If you haven't yet checked the ratings for washers in Consumer Reports, make the time to do so. Reading all the pros and cons can help you easily sort through what will work for you.

We do have a Samsung washer and dryer with touch.

pads. Sometimes we have to just unplug and replace to reset if it doesn't light up.
