Weird Thing Happened to Me at Costco

I went to Costco today to get gas, as they have the least expensive in town.

After I filled up, I decided to do a little shopping. I had five items in my cart, and the total came to just under $35.

When I went to pay with my Visa debit, the cashier said to me, "It says to contact the bank."

What???

I knew that I had money in my account, so I was worried as to why it wasn't being accepted.

So I swung by the bank to see what was going on.

The teller informed me that my card and account are fine.

Has anybody have something like this happen?

Why would my card be accepted at the pump, but not inside the store?

I’ve never had that happen but have to bow down to you for spending less than $35 at Costco.

I've had to decline cards because person didn't sign card just put CID. Company policy.

Maybe, it was thought someone was starting a little spree on your card.

Maybe in your best interest to cancel your card and get a new one.

That happens once in a while, only with my Visa. If the cashier tries again, it always goes through. They don't always want to try again.

I worked in a bank in college. There are many flags that can pick out a card. There is a reason they flag you.

@Anonymous032819 Debit cards are a horrible form of payment!!! No protection from fraud, no credit history to help build your credit score and no rewards.

@minimalistWF Not so. I only use my debit card at Safeway AND my bank gives 100% protection in case of any hacking or fraud. 100%.

I've had that happen when the strip on the back of my card was wearing out. I asked the bank for a new debit card and it hasn't happened since.

Alot of companies have fraud monitoring. It was likely that the two purchases within the same day in close time proximity may have triggered a fraud alert.

My payment card never leaves my posession in Costco or any other store. The only card they get is my membership card.

I've had that happen to me. Not at Costco though. Once buying gas and shopping on line. When I called credit card company, they said they couldn't see anything on their end that was a problem. Problem had to be on store end. This was using credit card, not debit card.

It happened to me @ Walmart. Five minutes later, I used the same card at the nearby grocery store....no issues with the card that time. Go figure.

It happens to me occasionally at our local stores. They just tell me to run it again and its OK.

Once in a blue moon, my bank will go off-line for one reason or another and during that period, any transactions are declined.

It could have been a glitch with the machine too.

Good point. After a year of shenanigans with my debit card, I stopped using it.

Don't know how people were shopping with it, but I got tired of going to the bank to get new ones.

Interesting how the bank knows when someone has used your card.
