Watch for my cousin’s daughter in the Olympics

Her name is Tilali Scanlan. She will be representing American Samoa on their women's swim team. Her first race is July 25 at 7:59 pm Tokyo time. Which is very very early EST. But I'll get up bright and early to watch her. Our family is so excited for her.

Hope she, and all the other athletes, get their chance to compete in this Olympics. Unfortunately it looks like there is still a distinct possibility that Japan may pull the carpet from under this year's competition ( a 20 billion dollar loss for Japan).

I believe former host Courtney Webb was and has been training for Skeleton competition in the Winter Olympics. Maybe in 2022 Beijing. ?

I believe Skeleton is those 'sled' type of competition that one lays on top of a 'sled' and races downhill in the snow? or non-snow?

The Skeleton is a WINTER sport, where they slide down a track of ice.

@ROMARY - Courtney will probably compete in the Winter Olympics in February 2022 in Beijing. I know she has worked hard.

@smoochy - What an honor for your whole family! I will be watching! My mom "almost" made the women's swim team many years ago. She was an excellent swimmer, but there were many who were better!

Thanks! She's a lovely young woman. Completed her degree in marine biology while training.

@smoochy I found a wonderful interview with pictures of Tilali. I loved her commitment to the environment and loved her answer to this question:

A: ....Bottom line is that life is codependent on the environment, and it pains me to see it suffer.

Kudos.

I also liked her answer about her favorite food-pasta and incorporating it into her life motto:

"Eat pasta, swim fasta." Wonderful sense of humor, too.

What a lovely young woman with strong family ties and an appreciation of where she comes from and what she will bring to the table in the future, too.

All the best to her-she is already a gold winner in many ways, imo.

This Olympics is so different from the norm that imho it really isn't much of an international event. Athletes can't mingle with other teams, no spectators ( including family) and winners won't get their medals awarded in the usual manner. The Japanese public doesn't support these games ( with good reason). I've been to three Olympics and I feel sorry for the future of this institution and its all because of corporate greed. Toyota, a Japanese corporation, won't even broadcast their Olympic campaign in Japan ( probably would cause backlash). The NBC ads showing all the athletes at opening ceremony isn't going to happen in any form any of us remember ( maybe digital onlookers and even some digital teams) sad!

Nope. No spectators allowed. Her very large family is from Samoa. Her mom (my first cousin) is from Michigan originally. The closest Tilali got to a family member was a few weeks ago in Bangkok. She had to quarantine for two weeks in a hotel, prior to going to training camp in Phuket. My daughter lives in Bangkok- she and Tilali phone messaged. My daughter went out and bought some things that Lali wanted and dropped them off for her.
