Northeast and the Heat

We are getting a break from the heat right now, but getting some of the remnants of hurricane Elsa.

I'm so happy for this little bit of rain, just hoping it won't get humid anymore time soon.

@gertrudecloset Enjoy your mild weather. Here in the western part of the USA, it was 115 degrees today. Tomorrow & Sunday, it's forecasted to be up to 117. Wish we had a little rain and a cool down.

Yes, some posters mentioned there was no firework celebrations because of the heat. We had some hot days. What makes it worse is the heat index or something like that. Where the humidity is just as high as the temperature. Dry heat is not nearly as bad as sticky humid heat.

@gertrudecloset 115 degrees is our temperature without an index making it higher. 115 is extreme and dangerously hot whether it's humid or dry. If we had a little rain, it would cool down for a bit, but we're still in an Extraordinary Drought. More than 200 people died from the heat in the Northwest a couple weeks ago. I'm looking forward to fall weather.

Us Boomers grew up without air conditioning.

I have always lived in Virginia. Summers have always been hot.

There used to be more snow. However, there have always been some summers that are hotter and Winters that are colder, etc.

It's not the hot temperatures that bother me....it's the humidity. They don't always go hand and hand.

I have two very large dehumidifiers that are at both ends of my house.

The minute the buckets are full it starts to feel like a sauna in the living room.

The high temperatures and the humidity knock me for a loop as the saying goes. I do not have any energy, my motivation to do anything is zero and I long for the cool weather. I have said this before on these posts, this type of weather is not healthy for many. I am glad to live in at an area where I do have seasons and I could never live in a place where it is hot all year around wherever that may be.

I will not be sorry to see this hot humid rainy summer end.

Same here. I feel like a limp rag doll. I guess that's why they warn about being out in that kind of weather. Taking precautions and trying to stay inside.

When I was still working I felt sorry for men who had to suit up. Of course, they were fine in the office, but geez @spiderw

@Annabellethecat66 My parents are from Virginia and it is my second home. I was born in New York though. Southern ways, and southern hospitality I got from my parents.

I remember the hot nights as a little girl, when we'd go down to visit other relatives who hadn't bothered to come up North. I have fond memories of my childhood with my dad and aunties. Yes it was hot. It still is, but when you're a kid you don't mind it so much maybe. I'm a woman of a particular age where the heat exascerbates that phase us women must go through. Whewwwww.....

Here in Maine we were glad to get the rain on friday ,we needed it, i grew up in southern Indiana, remember the fans in the windows, and ones on tables, the heat i don't remember bothering me ,but i might had forgot , can't stand the humidity in my old age.

When the dew point is 60 or > I am miserable. Dry heat doesn't even compare, it is like comparing apples and oranges.

Yea, the east coast humidity and heat can be a bummer. Like many others , grew up without airconditioning . We had screens in every window . When it was sweltering out side and to hot to play , we would play in the root cellar where it was cool or head to the creek to dip our legs in the water. When we had a summer rain we would sit out on the porch . You learned to deal with the heat .

The house I was brought to live from 3 months until around 13 is still there. We called them row houses. Now they're called townhouses. Ha!

Virginia is a wonderful place to live. We are just a "stones throw" from DC.

There are so many things and places to see.

We even have several beaches nearby. The school systems are wonderful. We have the top school in the country near us. My granddaughter and soon my grandson goes to that school.

It's a' magnet' school. Where I live, there is a lot of land that people still have farms.

Every Spring and Summer my youngest daughter who lives in Colorado, comes to spend a few months with me.

She was born here. She loves getting up early with her dog, sitting on the back screened porch, drinking her coffee and marvel at how green the area is.

We are known for our beautiful countryside.

Whoops! I'm sounding like a commercial like "Come visit Virginia"....ha!

The good news is we're about ten days from the average temperature peaking. (At least here in South Jersey.) July 21st is when the average temperature here peaks and from then until January 21st it's in decline. On January 21st (on average) it bottoms out and then starts to slowly climb again.

The heat and humidity don't really bother me. I don't like the cold though. I always tell people I'm still cold until about the end of May. By the first week or so of November, I've had enough cold weather and start looking forward to spring/summer.

The good news is in the summer the early morning hours are typically pretty comfy. We were down in the mid-sixties last night so I got out early today, watered my plants, pulled a few weeds, picked some corn for lunch, and I'm back inside now. In the winter, there is no relief. It's just cold all the time. There's no part of the day where you can sneak out and get stuff done comfortably. In August we typically start getting some nights in the fifties. By September nighttime temps are fairly routinely in the fifties. In October we get the first frost and sometimes even the first snow flurries.

I grew up without air conditioning and just fans and I survived just fine. I prefer the summer over the winter and would prefer to live someplace warmer even. At least in the winter.

I also live in Maine, grew up in the midwest also. We just put a heat pump in that also has air conditioning in our house last month. We really didn't use air conditioning much in Maine until the last 5 years. I love this new heat pump, I work from home and it makes it bearable.

@Annabellethecat66 I don't have any memories of sleeping outdoors as I didn't live there. However, whenever we would visit I always felt at home. Maybe because I was surrounded by family.

I can't tell you how many times I've been to Virginia before both mom and dad passed on and since then. Virginia Beach has always been a favorite for me and I took my children when they were young. I've been many times. I still have distant relatives in Virginia on both my mother's and father's side in Virginia. Nieces and grand nieces and nephews, cousins and more. My oldest sister died in Virginia in 2014.

@TurnerGal You're referring to a ductless mini split? I was supposed to do this for this Summer. I found a system I wanted, but when I called around to HVAC people they would only install the systems by manufacturers they deal with and service. In other words, if I found one on Home Depot, if it was not a brand that the HVAC people work with they would not install it. I did get a couple of quotes for Mitsubishi systems. I have separate heat and air but wanted something for another part of my home....

I remember my dad buying a "cooler." It was this big box made of metal of some kind that you had to put ice and/or cold water in. It didn't do what he envisioned it would do, but he was in the New York when doing this. He grew up in Virginia.

I always enjoyed when someone would let open a fire hydrant. Talk about the best fun in NYC's sweltering heat....

@gertrudecloset Yes we had someone install the Mitsubishi mini-splits. We have one larger one on our main floor and one smaller one upstairs. We love it. We have tried it for heating yet. There are different configurations. It is not cheap but the State has some energy rebates. Our State also offered low interest loans. The dealer we worked with offered Synchrony financing for 18 months, interest free if paid within the 18 months.
