The Summer Solstice Sunday 6/20/21

This year, the summer solstice in the northern hemisphere is Sunday June 20th at 11:32 p.m. ET. Happy first day of summer, the longest day of the year, after which the days will start getting shorter. (Bummer!)

I have always wanted to go to Stonehenge for the summer solstice. @dulwich have you ever been to Stonehenge (at any time?) It looks pretty amazing ....and it is really, really old.

According to NASA, "solstice" means "sun stands still" in Latin. At solar noon on the summer solstice, a person's shadow is the shortest it will be all year.

I visited Stonehenge once. At that time there was cement path around it, they kept you away from getting close. I think Druids may have a special privilege of getting close to the stones maybe at the Solstice. I think they now believe the stones came from Wales.

Sorry @Pearlee for the cryptic response 😊. Yes, my feelings are the opposite. The summer solstice is one of my favorite days of the year because it means cooler times are ahead for us(eventually). Enjoy your beautiful summer!

As a resident of South Texas I wholeheartedly agree with you.....with daylight savings time, the sun doesnt set until 8:30 PM and it doesnt even get dark until after 9:30 PM....all the while the A/C is going full blast.... I look forward to the shorter and cooler days ahead too....I'm just not a fan of summer at ALL! 🌞🌡🥵

@Spurt. @tucsongal. My comment bemoaning that the days will be getting shorter were not about the heat and humidity of summer at all. I love having all the daylight; I'm so much more constructive when I have evening hours of daylight to use. It's so depressing when it gets dark around 5pm; the day just seems so short.

I love having so many hours of sunlight but I could do without the heat and humidity. There's always air conditioning...

Well here in Texas it stays light too long, we dont need daylight savings time (thats my feeling) . I think my mom was right, they got Daylight Savings Time backwards its needed more in the fall/winter months so it doesnt get dark quite as early...

I'm really suffering in this heat. Looks like a slight "cool down" (109) this week, but then right up again by Sat. Ugh!

@Spurt. I'm with you too! It's so miserably hot here in Phx. I know TX is getting it too and you have the humidity. Summer is my least favorite season. I live for the sun setting and my house to get dark inside. Stay safe and "try" to stay cool.

I'm real cranky too! I think I'm going to lose weight, I am too tired and too hot to cook at night. Problem is, I fall asleep without dinner and in the AM, I'm kind of weak from not eating the night before.

How I long to be cooking some chili. LOL!

I'm another one that looks forward to shorter days! I don't like the heat and humidity and I also don't like all the sunshine at 6 or 7 in the evening! I love winter, cold and dark!❄🌬🌚

@Starpolisher I can't relate to this at all! 😄 🌞

I've also found that as I've aged, winter cold, dark, and snow gets harder and harder to deal with. Harder to see at night, harder to put on boots due to arthritis in knee and hip, etc. Give me long days, esp to enjoy the evening time. Moderate temps and low humidity and plenty of sunshine are ideal. 🌅☀️

@Pearlee Lol! I have arthritis also. I'm going to have knee replacement surgery in the near future. For me, it feels worst when it's humid outside. Even with the ac on, the barometric pressure certainly plays a role with my arthritic pain. In winter, I can get more comfortable. I can breathe better too! Although, sometimes there's humidity then too. I like it to get dark early. Around 5 or 6pm. That tells me the day is almost over and it's okay to slow down. When it stays light until 9pm, I feel like I have to be, or should be, doing something. The cold winter and early darkness just suits my personality better too! It has more of a calming effect on me. The same as rain and thunderstorms. We're all different! 😁
