Getting Called Baby By Strangers.

I hate people I don't know calling me baby, honey or sweetie.

Today I ran to a convenience store a couple miles from home. A bunch of guys were getting out of a truck with out of state plates.

I was deciding what I wanted while waiting for someone to check out in front of me. He left and another guy, probably 50 came up and I motioned for him to go ahead as he was holding several items.

I got, "go ahead baby, I have all day." Baby? I am 490 in dog years.

I should have gone Julia Sugarbaker on him but if his Mother couldn't teacher him manners I'm not wasting my breath.

I have a friend who calls everybody honey. Every waiter, waitress, sales person, everybody. I think she thinks she is being endearing but I often wonder what the recipients of the term think.

Personally, I find it sexist and condescending.

DH is the only one that calls me 'baby', which is how he usually addresses me.

Yeah, I agree. They can call me those saccharine names anytime they want to, considering the alternatives I've heard .

Just a word to the wise. Remember the times we are living in. You best not give anybody a reason to harm you. I'd smiled and zipped my lip.

I don't fllip the bird at people any more that take parking spots that I have sit and waited for the people to pull out of, people that sit at intersections lights talking on cell phones while the light is green.

Read the paper, watch the news. That woman who's baby got shot I saw on Inside Edition had gave the guy behind her the finger and he got mad and shot at her trunk, shot went thru to the back seat and killed the baby .

If you have a DVD player watch Russel Crowe movie where a woman

P o's him and she had some serious trouble on her hands. Road rage

movie can't remember the name of it right now. Just one word in the title, but, warning you we're in a different world now. It's not Mayberry any more.

'Unhinged', is the name of the movie. I have a different attitude now.

@SharkE Yep, one reason I didn't say what I wanted to. Too many people today are 1 can short of a six pack.

Even though their license plate was from the middle of the country they kind of had a Deliverence feeling about them.

@KingstonsMom I hate baby under any circumstances. DH called me hon or sweetie but he knew better than to use baby or babe.

Another no no is doll. There was a guy in town that called women doll. I wanted to punch him everytime he said it.

I wouldn't accept it in the workplace.

But other than that, if someone's just being nice and that's just the way they talk, I don't really mind being called honey or baby or sweetheart. It's happened all my life.

I'm glad I didn't make you mad. Wasn't my intention. Just woman to woman trying to warn you. Asian women just walking down the street are getting slugged in the streets.

I don't like being a push over, but, I'm alive and haven't had acid thrown in my face. Something else I've seen on the news. Her only sin was coming home from work and this boy came up to her and threw acid in her eyes just for the fun of it.

Worse, I've received is when I first moved to Tx. didn't know my way around yet and I didn't know which way to turn ---right or left? This man

hollered "Move it you old *itch" !!!

Brings to mind a song "welcome to the jungle".

@CrazyKittyLvr2 When it's a stranger talking, it's jusr another nobody in my life who doesn't have my preferred manners. Not responding is a good idea.

When it's someone I know that's actually a part of my life, say a co-worker, then I resent it.

I don't get bent out of shape by things that have little effect on my life. I'd have said "thank you", paid for my things and left.

I once had a roommate who went ballistic on an older man for holding open a door for her. She came home and ranted to me about it and then couldn't believe my sympathy was with the gentleman. She felt it was demeaning and that he'd held the door just because she was a woman.

I informed her that, no, he held the door because he was being polite and would've done the same for a man. It's the way we are where I come from. She was from a "big city" in another state and brought her attitude with her.

She eventually moved back to her big city, where I'm sure no one bothered to hold doors open.

That's right, @SharkE and @CrazyKittyLvr2. We have to guard our reactions very carefully these days.

I swear someone is putting evil juice in the darn water systems, or something, that's impairing impulse control.

Just walk away, is my mantra these days. Walk away, run if needed.

@CrazyKittyLvr2 @Look at the man's intent. He was letting you cut in line. He is probably unaware that calling you baby diminishes and infantalizes you, but he was trying to be nice.

Getting angry with someone that is being nice isn't right and trying to get the man to wake up and realize it's 2021 and women have come a long way from "Baby" would be far too difficult under the circumstances of the incident you described.

@Mindy D Saying go ahead would be being nice. Adding baby irked me. I wouldn't have like "go ahead honey" either but it would have been a hair less offensive.

Put it this way, my son is probably 5 years younger than this guy and if I heard him call an any woman let alone a 70 yr. old woman baby, he and I would have a serious chat.

I would not have said anything in that situation. There would have been no point. In other situations, I would just ask the person refrain from using such terms. I would be polite, maybe joke about it but I'd be clear about it.

On the west coast it's "darling." I don't say it - trust me on that - but have had others say it to me and not dahling but full pronunciation with the R. Grates on me.
