We had a strange and somewhat frightening event happen to us today!

This morning my husband and I went shopping and on the way home as we were going down a well used street a police car came down behind us at a rapid speed with his siren going. The car ahead of us pulled to the side and we did the same thing. As I was looking in my rear view mirror I noticed that a rather beat up older red car was directly behind us. He didn't seem to want to pull over for the officer and looked annoyed at us because he had to stop.

As the police car passed us we suddenly heard a extremely loud bang and the rear window of our SUV completely imploded. It took a second for me to comprehend what had happened. I screamed to my husband, are we being shot at. He was shook but kept his composure and said I don't know what just happened but let's get out of here.

After I regained my senses I looked in the mirror and noticed the red car backing up and quickly heading down a side street. Fortunately we weren't very far from our home so we immediately headed there and even before we started to look at our car my husband called the police.

We then went out to our car and started to search for any bullet holes or anything that could have caused our window to shatter. While we were cleaning out the thousand of shards of broken glass the police arrived. The officer looked through our car and didn't find any signs that someone had used a gun but he did say that it was possible that it was a pellet gun. He also told us a few days earlier he investigated a case where someone in our area had four bullets fired into their car because apparently the jackass behind them felt that they weren't going fast enough. Luckily no one was hurt.

My husband told the officer that after the window blew out we were so shook that we just headed home and didn't think to try and get a description of the car other than the color. The officer said that was understandable and we did the correct thing by getting out of the area.

I can't begin to say how upsetting it was. I was just happy that whatever hit the window wasn't a bullet. The officer did say that it was possible that a bullet ricocheted and bounced off but he felt that something like that would be unusual.

We will never know what caused the window to implode but I am grateful that our car wasn't moving at the time.

Now we get the fun of having to pay a $300 dollar deductible to repair the window. I can only imagine how much our insurance is going to have to pay to fix all of the damage that was created. The window is destroyed, the wiper is destroyed and all of the wires that control the lift and defroster are ruined. On top of all of that we can't get our car repaired until June 18th because they are so busy. Fortunately we have a second vehicle to use.

This was a nasty event but I am so relieved that we are both still here and it is only a car that can be repaired.

There is so much lunacy going on and I am always worried about being out and about. Now I know that I will be even more vigilant when we are anywhere but in our home.

Wow! So scary & upsetting. All I could think of as I was reading your situation was that little boy in CA that was shot & killed in the road rage incident a couple weeks ago. So glad they caught those 2 scum bags. Some people are really crazy. I used to be friends with someone that was always blowing the horn at other cars thinking they were changing lanes & were going into her. It was not true. She just had poor space judgement. I told her to stop because I didn't want to be the next road rage victim. Glad I don't associate with her any longer for other reasons. Glad you & your husband are safe & continue to be. 😊

What a terrifying experience @J Town Girl . I am glad both of you are OK. Two children were just killed by gunshots, so this is a serious problem in this country.

Yet ANOTHER stark example of reckless disregard for human life, or safety!😠 The headlines of late leave me rattled to my core. I never imagined that I would EVER be fearful of sitting in a car while stopped at a traffic light, or in a car traveling at the posted speed limit.😐

I am so very sorry your husband and you had to endure something this terrifying, but am relieved that NO ONE was hurt!!!😞

Thank goodness you are okay. some people out there are crazy. You just never know what they will do.

A few years ago, I was driving across a bridge between Stone Harbor and Cape

May, NJ when I heard a loud noise and my front window shattered. I almost had a heart attack. The bridge was long and I was only half way over it..no other cars were around.

I ducked down and drove the rest of the way across the bridge that way. When I felt safe, I pulled over . My heart was racing. I was about to call the police ro report a shooting when my daughter discovered a large clam and a pound of sand lodged between my front window and the car. A seagull was dropping clams on the bridge from above to break them open.

It was terrifying at the time. I know how you felt. I am glad everything is okay for you and I hope they catch that idiot who shot something way.

Frightening by all means. I hope the officer made nite of the description of older red car. Cameras in area might have caught. I would imagine this is no isolated incident. Recently in MO there were two random shootings from cars. Cameras helped narrow field and tie to murders in neighboring state.

I can relate to feelings of hesitancy to go out. I hate to let fear constrict my life. Best of luck to getting mess taken care of.

I would like to thank each and everyone one of you who posted your kind thoughts. It means a lot to me.

I just received a call from the officer who came to our house. He wanted to make sure that we were okay and to let me know that he went back to where this happened and said he saw our broken glass on the road but could not find any bottles or objects that they could have thrown. He said he's still believes that it might have been a pellet gun.

We live in a small town outside of a large city and we have the best police officers that you could find. They do everything they can for us and risk their lives each and every day. It makes me so angry when I hear people around here knocking them.

I forgot to add that the officer who passed us was on his way to a very serious car fire right down from our house. As we were heading home we passed it and I just hope that everyone got out without injuries. It was just engulfed in flames.

that was an extremely alarming thing to happen and you are very fortunate that you and your husband weren't injured. sadly, though, you even need to be vigilant at home. recently my husband and I were at home and we suddenly heard very loud gunshots. turns out, some idiots were driving down our street in 2 cars, shooting at each other. one of them exited his car and ran into our garage while shooting at the people in the other car. they scariest part was that my husband had just been out in the garage a few minutes before this happened. the police found bullet casings on the roof and in the bed of my husband's truck, in our driveway and yard.

it's a sad thought, but I'm not sure we are really safe anywhere anymore.

I am glad that you and your husband are ok. We have so many unhinged people in our world, it has become increasingly difficult for survival. Take care and be thankful it was just your car that was damaged.

First of all, very glad that both of you weren't hurt.

'Around here', some drivers aren't very patient, and often honk their horns when we're letting a senior pedestrian, usually with a cane or rolling walker, cross the street right in front of us.

I guess that the inpatient drivers want us to run over senior pedestrians.
