Washing Machine Question

Thinking of purchasing a new washer, was looking at the Speed Queen TR5 or TR7.

Reading a lot of reviews saying that they don't clean well because of the stationary agitator.

If anyone has one of these machines, could you tell me which one you have and also your opinion of the machines performance.

I'll also take recommendations on any washer brand.

I have a Samsung VRTplus HE washer and I must say it is the best one I have ever had. It has no agitator and is so kind to all my clothes no matter what setting I use. I bought the washer and dryer online through Lowes website when we moved down here in SC. They delivered and hooked up without any problem. I have had it 2 1/2 years. The washer basin is large but I wait till I have a full load and the cycles have a water saver type sytem but there is one cycle with deep water wash. It would not hurt to see if it still is made. Things have certainly changed, I guess. How can an Agitator be stationary? Aren't they supposed to ... agitate?

You might want to do a search of Consumer Reports and see what they have to say.

If u plan to buy a washing machine from Lowes or Home Depot (I prefer Lowes) - go to their site and read reviews on several different washing machines. You'll be knowledgeable if u go to the actual store - where you should ask more questions.

I have owned many washers over the past 51 years.

I have owned a SPEED QUEEN washer with agitator. It was one lousy washer. my wash would NOT RINSE out the soap. I would have to rinse my clothes sometimes 2x's to get soap out of the clothes. I found it did not clean my clothes well at all. I kept the washer for 3 years, and just gave up on the washer and got me a front load washer and love it. my clothes are clean, they are now white and clothes are rinsed out well. I swear by my front load washer.

I have an LG front load washer now..

I also have had a whirlpool,maytag,GE, and who knows what else washer over the years. they all have been top loader with agitator. My LG washer is the 1st front load washer, real please with my LG.

Hope you get a washer you love and happy with.

This isn't the answer you were seeking, but I thought it might help. I have really enjoyed my GE washer and dryer, but I prefer a top load washer so I can't speak to their front load models.

The agitator does move back and forth, but it's one piece. Speed Queen's older model made until 2017 came in two parts.

Look up the Maytag MVWP575GW

3.5 Cu ft Commercial-Grade Residential Agitator Washer.

It is the well-known Maytag model reintroduced in 2018...look up the Maytag repairman commercials..."the loneliest man in town?"

This model's agitator comes in two parts, each moving in opposite directions.

You can watch demonstrations of both the Speed Queen and Maytag models on Youtube from start to finish. The Maytag moves the clothing around much better than the Speed Queen.

In the last couple of years I got a GE set, also, and it's been pretty good. Bit of a learning curve from 20 year old machines, though!

One area where I lucked out because I didn't know about this is that it has an 'extra fill' button. This is handy in the new machines because they don't fill as much as they used to.

I also prefer a top-loader and mine doesn't have an agitator at all. One thing I like about that is that you don't end up with it going on tilt as easily as the machines I had over the decades (all with the regular agitator they all used to have). I think it will actually adjust if the items aren't perfectly level but I do make a point to put the items in fairly evenly. I don't do a "full load" anymore, as I think it does better at slightly less full.

We have an LG Inverter washer with Direct Drive and matching dryer. I love it! I can get a large blanket in it! No agitator, so I rinse twice.

We got it from Lowes in NC.

I guess that I shouldn't have said stationary. The agitator is attached and moves with the drum instead of independently.

I hope that I said that right.

@Sg1957 - my current Maytag was new in May 1983. So, I KNOW I will need a new washer at some point soon. I have been reading all the posts here for several years whenever anyone asks about washing machines. I have read lots of horror stories about low amounts of water and clothes not getting clean, etc. So, had pretty much decided on the commercial Maytag several people have recommended. BUT, we rented a house at the beach recently and the washer there was brand new. And I was pleasantly surprised that I really liked it. It was a Hotpoint and had deep fill and I was able to hit the pause button throughout the cycle to peek in and see what was going on. So, now I am leaning towards this machine. It is the Hotpoint HTW240ASKWS (at Home Depot but is also sold at Lowes). It has a stainless steel drum and an agitator. Now, we are not construction workers nor to we have kids that roll in the mud or incontinent pets. But, for our purposes, this seems like a nice machine, it gets good reviews, and best of all, I got to test drive it in the rental house and get a real life experience. Good luck whatever you choose.

LOVE my speed queen set. it is now about 2 years old. you can change the water level, soil level, it has a digital panel, it is very quiet, and it has a 7 year warranty. TR7000WN MADE IN THE USA!

yes, it has an agitator and gets things clean very well!

This thread differs from the other, most recent thread which asked for washing machine recommendations. In that thread, people praised Speed Queen. That thread made think it was best, now this thread makes me think it's not a good brand to get.

A week or so ago, I thought my 19 year old Maytag Atlantis electric dryer (the matching washer died in 2010) was finally about to die. I do my laundry on Saturdays, so was relieved when it seemed to be working OK this past Sat.

But, it started me thinking maybe I needed to start thinking about a new W/D, especially with the appliance backorders going on now with the pandemic. I've been waiting for 8 months to have my new KitchenAid French door fridge delivered, my salesman is hopeful that it will get here this week, fingers crossed. If it was going to be a months-long wait to get a new W/D, I didn't want to get caught out & wanted to at least have one coming in the pipeline.

So, I went shopping yesterday at my local appliance store. I knew I wanted a gas dryer when my current one died, since my house was already plumbed for a gas dryer when I bought it. I was thinking I'd probably go Maytag again, but the salesman (the same guy that I'd bought my new kitchen appliances from 8 mos. ago) told me Maytag isn't what it used to be & is made by Whirlpool, now & he couldn't really recommend them anymore.

My current washer is a Maytag Bravos HE w/o an agitator & I have mixed feelings about it after using it for 11 yrs. I thought I wanted a washer with an agitator again & the sales guy showed me several, including a Speed Queen. He said some of the Speed Queen appliances wouldn't be delivered until Sept., due to manufacturing backlogs.

He went over various brands & models & I ultimately ended up buying a GE (model GTW720BPNDG) without an agitator & a GE gas dryer (model GTD72GBPDNG). He told me he & his wife have had this same set for a few years now & have been very pleased with them. I've never had a GE W & D before, so this will be a new experience for me. And, when he looked to see when they'd be here, he said they actually had both in stock at their warehouse right now, so they're being delivered on June 7th! I had gone shopping before my old stuff died thinking I'd be waiting for months, due to the pandemic, but nope.

Now, I need to get my dryer vent cleaned in the next week!

I have a Whirlpool Duet electric front load W/D and love it. It is the best I have ever had and will buy another set just like it when this one dies. Still going strong after many years. Important to buy the pedestals also; really saves your back, two of my daughters have bought topload washers recently and I find myself almost standing on my head to get clothes out of it when the cycle is over. I like my Whirlpool because I can wash just one or two things on hand wash and it only uses enough water for those things. Very gentle and the motion mimics how you would hand wash in a sink.

We just bought a new washing machine and dryer set. We got the Hotpoint washer HTW240ASKWS, also. Our recent washing machine isn't draining water properly and we have to ring out some of the clothes by hand. The dryer still works, but we decided to get a new one, since that will probably go next. They will be delivered in two weeks.

We got the appliances on sale from Home Depot. Our new gas range and refrigerator are from Home Depot, and they are nice, so we decided to get the washing machine from the same place. It happened that all those main appliances started breaking down with the past two months. Go figure.

Thanks IG for explaining to tinkerbell about what LG is.

I really like my LG washer front loader. it cleans ever so well, have the 4000 series washer newest model. 5 water jets which means faster washes. rinses are done with 5 water jets so plenty of water to clean clothes in this new 4000 series washer
