Happy New Year Everyone!!

I haven't watched The Rose Parade in sooooo long.......but watching today.

These floats are amazing!!!!

What do they do with all those flowers after the parade? Anyone know?

I believe you can tour the floats after the parade , for a fee. My relative buys a package deal to see the parade in VIP section, hotel and views the floats.

I love Pasadena! I've never been there for this parade, but then I'm really not much for parades. I didn't even know you had to pay to see it.

I so miss going to the Rose Parade since moving from So Calif. TV doesn't do it justice. The floats are put on display for several days before they dismantle them. I've been over a dozen times and never had to pay to see it. Maybe, in the special stands & bleachers you do, I don't know.

I love watching the Rose Parade, the things they create are so clever and beautiful. It boggles my mind to think of how many roses and other flowers they use. I would have so much fun if I had the opportunity to work on a float. I'm watching it on NBC with Al and Hoda, they are having a good time. Looks like a beautiful day there in Pasadena.

I'm watching it on HGTV, only because it's commercial-free. But the announcing leaves much to be desired.

Watching on ABC. One of my friends who lives in Pasadena works on the float from LaCanada, I think that is the name of the town, some years. Her kids too. What a wonderful experience to be able to volunteer and participate on one of the magnificent floats!!!!

The Rose Parade has become overwhelming in the last twenty years. It was so much more fun back in the 50s & 60s. It was about everyday people and volunteering to decorate. It has morphed into a Hollywood extravaganza. When I was in high school and college we would go to where they decorated the floats and help. It was fun and smelled fantastic, there were snacks and beverages, people having a good time and spending all night helping. There were no fences or armed guards like today. Mostly what we did was put each single flower into tiny water filled tubes and stick them into the chicken wire one at a time. It was actually pretty monotonous work. But the comraderie was the best. It used to take about three days with many many people to finish one float. Cannot even imagine what it would take today. Lovely to look at though. Enjoyable for all.

I think the Property Brothers are doing a great job on HGTV, not thrilled with Nancy O'Dell.

Watching the parade helps me to ignore the snow that has been falling since last night. Wish I was in Cali.

Hi there guys,

it's been for me also some years that I last saw it. It reminds me of my Father, who was a landscape architect in the Netherlands, and often was in charge of large flower exhibits, Dutch and so to international shows. At the age of 14 or so, i started to help him, do all kind of different things, and I walked on his arm, clearly showing off and letting the world know I was so proud of him.

For people here who travel to Europe on a regular basis for vacation, try to be in the Netherlands and catch the exhibit the FLORIADE. My Dad won an award for that, as his work was exquisite. After his passing, my sister inherited that, given that she has two children, who were intimitely familiar with his work...

My sister will be living in MURIETTA, CA starting the end of this month. Anybody has any tips for her. I checked out the house on the internet, and I love it. The secret being it is extremely light, with many windows. 3 Bedrooms, 2 grown children, and not to forget me. I, living in DC, will find it very hard due to the costs involved, to be able to visit there often, and as i just found out, we have fewer international tourists coming, so less income...

Magenta, my in-laws went to some huge flower extravaganza in the Netherlands on their 50th anniversary trip a couple of years ago . . . they were gone for 60 days total . . . they regretted such a long trip . . . said half of that would have been better. haha. But they did meet up with one daughter and her family in Ireland/Scotland/England portion for two weeks of that and met up with other daughter and a granddaughter for a two week Med Cruise, actually the daughter & granddaughter SURPRISED them and booked the balcony cabin next door to them and called them on the phone after they were on the ship and told them to walk out onto their balcony!!! They were very shocked to say the least!!! My Mother-in-law LOVES LOVES LOVES all flowers and trees and that is always a part of any vacation for her to visit botanical gardens and nature hikes too!

I agree. There were several groups I wondered about that they didn't mention. Jonathan and Drew are cute but they knew nothing about the parade or flowers. All they did was talk about themselves. I like the horse groups but they barely mentioned them.

I switched to the network because those two on HGTV drove me nuts! One of them harassing the marchers and asking inane questions and the other babbling on about his childhood. There were commercial breaks on the network, yes, but the commentary was intelligent and informative and was about the floats and the participants.
