Just started our January book for book club: The Dovekeepers by Alice Hoffman. I'm a bit annoyed that it doesn't have discernible chapters, just minor breaks, and not much dialogue so far.

It is the story of the Roman siege of Masada told through the eyes of 4 Jewish women. I would not have chosen it and just hope it isn't another The Red Tent, which I hated. (2 mentions already in the first 30 pages of the "woman's monthly cycle" makes me dread where this might be going.)

I read The Antagonists by Ernest K Gann years ago which told this story through the eyes of both the Jewish resistance leader and the Roman general who lead the siege. It will be interesting to see how this one compares.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO LAINEY AND MY FELLOW BOOK LOVERS HERE.

Just finished ""The Winter Sea "" by Susanna Kearsley. Give this one a

Historical fiction about Scotland in the 1700's with back-and-forth scenes of present time and then. The premise is that an author moves to a remote part of Scotland to do the research not knowing why she was drawn to that place. She seems to think she ""remembers"" living the story and places her ancestors into the plot.

She handles the transitions between the past and present very well creates an atmosphere of mystery in both time periods that is perfect for cold winter night's.

Thank you lainey for starting this wonderful book thread again. Happy New Year to all my fellow readers!

I've read mainly very comfortable books over the holidays. I finished up the Isabel Dalhousie series with The Uncommon Appeal of Clouds. Also read Blue Shoes And Happiness in the #1 Ladies Detective Agency Series. And I read the first in the 44 Scotland Street Series. I'm really looking forward to more of those. I was on a total Alexander McCall Smith kick. They were nice holiday reading.

I also started a new series by Vicki Delany. The main character is Constable Molly Smith and they take place in a fictional town in British Columbia. The first was In the Shadow of the Glacier and the 2nd was Valley of the Lost. I have the next one in the series, Winter of Secrets, on my Kindle now.

I forgot to mention, I read The Twisted Root by Anne Perry. As much as I liked her last book that I read (A Breach of Promise) I absolutely hated The Twisted Root.

I'm currently reading The Hunting Season, the 10th in the Anna Pigeon National Park series by Nevada Barr.

I am presently reading "The Girl with No Name" by Marina Chapman with Vanessa James Lynn Barrett-Lee but I got it from the library and ordered it for only $6.00 not thinking the library would get their only copy in and I would be waiting! Anyway I am up to page 75 (got it yesterday and think I will have it read in a day or 2 more). Fast read and interesting! Whether parts of it are true to not, who knows, but I know this book holds my interest without having a million characters and boring descriptions so it is most appealing to me!

I would so far give it 9 out of 10!!!

Happy New Year everyone, and thank you again to Lainey for keeping our group together!

The last book I read in 2013 was Ford County by John Grisham. I loved it, and now I'm done with all the Ford County books!

I'm now reading two books. One is Johnny Carson, by Henry Bushkin. It's a biography written by his long time friend and business lawyer. I just started it so I can't say if it's good or not, but so far I'm enjoying the "dish." Johnny Carson was certainly a multi-faceted personality!

The other book I'm reading and loving is Donbas: The True Story of an Escape from the Soviet Union, by Jacques Sandulescu. It's about a Romanian teenager who gets arrested for no reason and is taken to a Russian labor camp. All he wants to do is escape. It's rated as a YA book but I have to tell you that it's excellent reading. I can't wait to get to the end to find out what happens to him.

I'm going to try to read more this year, as last year I read 61 books. This year my goal is 100. Wish me luck!

I wish you all a happy and healthy New Year. Happy reading to you all!

Sunny

I just finished The Hen of the Baskervilles by Donna Andrews. This is part of the Meg Langslow mystery series. I have to admit, I had almost given up on this series. The last couple books prior to this book really hadn't been that entertaining IMO. This was a pleasant surprise that I enjoyed this book! This book seemed to concentrate more on the mystery part of the story and less on some of the more annoying reoccuring characters in the series. It has renewed my interest in the series and I will get the next book from the library.

When I was looking over any new offerings through my e-library, I was surprised to find the new Flavia de Luce book (The Dead In Their Vaulted Arches) available as a Hold. It's due to be published January 14th and I'm #6 on the list. I was on waitlist for months last year at the library. Kindle and ePub books seem to come in a lot faster. I love my online library!

I'm reading Sycamore Row by John Grisham and enjoying it also. I like books that grab your interest right from the start and I think this one does. The main character is the same lawyer from his book A Time to Kill.

I just watched that movie last night so now I am visualizing Matthew McConaughey as I read!

I just finished Doctor Sleep by Stephen King and thought it was one of his best, but I'm a huge fan anyway. It is somewhat of a sequel to the Shining, about the little boy Danny and his "shining" in his adult life.

Happy New Year everyone. Someone recommended this book THE WOODCUTTER by Reginald Hill. This is the first book I have read by this author. I am about 1/3 through and am really enjoying it. It is a great read to get me through the big blizzard we just had. Awful weather ... Frigid temps, blizzard conditions and a five hour snow cleanup (in Nova Scotia). Done now and ready to read again!!! Many thanks for this recommendation. LM Description follows ...... Wolf Hadda's life has been a fairytale. From humble origins as a Cumbrian woodcutter's son, he has risen to become a hugely successful entrepreneur, happily married to the girl of his dreams.A knock on the door one morning ends it all. Universally reviled, thrown into prison while protesting his innocence, abandoned by friends and family, Wolf retreats into silence. Seven years later prison psychiatrist Alva Ozigbo makes the breakthrough. Wolf begins to talk and under her guidance gets parole, returning to his rundown family home in rural Cumbria. But there is a mysterious period in Wolf's youth when he disappeared from home and was known to his employers as the Woodcutter. And now the Woodcutter is back, looking for the truth - and with the truth, revenge. Can Alva intervene before his pursuit of vengeance takes him to a place from which he can never come back..?

Lilysmom, I am a big Reginald Hill fan especially his Daziel and Pascoe police mysteries. Another good author who writes interesting British mysteries similar to Reginald Hill is Peter Robinson.
