What would you do?

I was in schaumburg ill this weekend,shopping at woodfield mall and ikea.my family and I stayed at a home place 2.at first glance,everything looked fine.i had a full size fridge,nice micro,and bath.wow,couldn't believe this.when going to take a shower,I spotted ants all over bathroom floor and in shower.i took pictures to show the hotel manager.long story short,I was discounted my room.after leaving hotel for home,I thought to myself,for 174.00,this room should have been ant free,and I should have gotten room free.am I being unreasonable?

I would have asked to change rooms as soon as I saw the ants.

No, reasonable complaint. Good customer service to give you a discount although, I agree, deleting the room rental amount would've been better.

Always good to speak up.

It is unreasonable to expect to get the room for free. You never gave them the opportunity to provide you with a different room so a discount is proper.

Another vote to request a different room and making sure it had no signs of ants, etc.

As soon as I noticed the ants, I would have asked for and gotten a different room.

Asking for a different room would have been what I would have done.

Check your things and make sure they are ant free so when you are home you don't bring them home.

I would not have been willing to shower with the ants. So I would have put my clothes back on and called the front desk to request a different room in a different area of the hotel.

You weren't in the wrong to do what you did, though, and I agree with your that they would have been wise to completely comp you the room.

I agree with the poster above me. It isn't like she left the hotel.

She did get to stay for the night or however long she was there.

Think of it this way. If you go out to dinner. Then you ate all of the meal but you didn't think it was very good. Perhaps you ate the baked potato and the salad and not the steak.

I still think you should pay something. I think either giving you a card for a free meal another time MIGHT be OK.

But actually, I think it would be fair to cut some of the bill.

I've actually had a manager more than once tell me the meal was free.

What I often do is give a much bigger tip to the waiter. Often they apologize profusely for the food I didn't like.

I will say, "Did you cook it?" They're like, "No" (laughing). I'd say, "Don't apologize, it has nothing to do with you".

Then I give them a much bigger tip.

I also would have gotten the heck out of the shower and contacted the front desk immediately, told them what's going on and had them give me another room. Right then and there.

No way would I have stayed in that room or even in the hotel. I would have called other hotels and tried to book a room, if so then demanded my money back and left.

No, you're not unreasonable. I wouldn't want to complete my stay there. If one room has ants, I'd expect others would as well.

Is this Homewood Suites Schaumburg owned by Hilton Hotels? Guests complaining of ants in the kitchen, even in microwaves.

I agree with you!, mspat, As soon as I saw the ants or any bugs I would have been out of there. Another room wouldn't have done it for me because if ants are in one room, I would imagine them being in other rooms.

This happened to me along the way, I saw a big bug in the bathroom sink when I first entered the motel room. I was out of there without hesitation.

Oh heck yes I asked for a different room.none available. Ants and bedbugs r 2 different things.ive had bedbugs from a downtown Chicago hotel,and was miserable wondering is this just in windycity?

Like several others, I would not have stayed in a room with ants or any other insects. But in my time and travels, I put up with something much worse than ants.

Sometimes you don't have a choice to search for another room or another hotel for one reason or other. I remember when I was in my 20s, I stopped off at the Greek island of Chios for one night on my way back from the island of Lesbos (Mytilene), where I had visited family friends who returned to their native island from Maryland.

The reason I stopped off at Chios was because both sets of grandparents of my first husband were from that Aegean island, and I promised to visit the place just to say I'd seen it.

Not knowing anyone there, I grabbed a hotel down by the wharf after exiting the ship that brought me there from Mytilene. That night, while in the large communal bathroom down the hall from my room, a huge rat ran across the floor. Ugh! What did I expect? I was down by the water.

Anyway, I spent a sleepless night in that hotel, checked out early and boarded my ship to return me to Piraeus. Whew!

A similar situation happened to me several years ago. DH, son & I checked into a hotel in Orlando.We opened up the closet to hang up some clothes & there were bugs crawling up the walls. I closed the closet door & immediately went down to the front desk.
At first they said they had no other rooms. My response was then I want a full refund we're checking out. The manager over heard the conversation & offered us a free upgrade to a suite with a balcony. I accepted. The suite was on the concierge level.We got free breakfast, drinks & food anytime we wanted it. We ended up having a great time!!
