if i had only read this years ago.....spent my life being a people pleaser....it's what i was taught.....just started taking care of myself a few years ago.....

I still feel guilty when I'm being unproductive. Doesn't stop me of course. But I don't feel good about it.

My new favorite word is "NO"... no I'm not cooking tonite, NO I don't want to donate to the whatever fund at work, No thank you I don't want any GS cookies, I could go on and on...there's a way to be a polite "No'er" ha!

Back in the early 80's a social worker friend of mine gave me a book: "When I Say 'No,' I Feel Guilty." It was a blessing! I marked pages and re-read sections of it over and over. I felt it was written just for me. Anyway, that book taught assertiveness without being angry or offensive (the "broken record" method) and just gave me strength to stand up for myself. I kept that book for years to give myself refresher lessons. Before I read it, I was everybody's doormat. Not any more.
