Miami Beach Spring Break 2021:Out of Control

City commissioners voted to keep an 8 p.m.-to-6 a.m. curfew in their entertainment district, with an exception for restaurant delivery services, as well as restrictions on causeways beginning at 10 p.m.

The rules, which began Saturday in a 72-hour state-of-emergency order, will remain in effect through the end of the month, with the possibility that they could be extended to mid-April.

The city has made over 1,000 arrests since February, about half of them involving out-of-state-residents, and the influx has led to increasing crowd-control issues, Miami Beach officials said Sunday.

The types of crowds that have descended on the popular South Florida destination are not made up of the regular college-age students officials are used to, Mayor Dan Gelber and City Manager Raul Aguila said. "I don't see this is a sort of spring break thing, because I don't think these are college kids," Gelber said. "I think it changes the nature of what we're in front of here. I think there are very few places that are open as we have been and as our state has been open. And there are even precious fewer places as beautiful as ours that is open."

Aguila said Florida's lax Covid-19 rules have encouraged people from outside the state to visit.

"This is a spring break like no other," Aguila said.

Gov. Ron DeSantis agreed to help provide Florida Highway Patrol reinforcement and resources from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement for the city, Gelber said.

In recent weeks, officers have taken over streets and sidewalks, Police Chief Richard Clements said, and officers have seized an "alarming" number of firearms.

"We've let our officers know that the frequency by which they're encountering these weapons on the street are probably greater than we've seen in five years," Clements said.

Officers have struggled to rein in large groups of people who have caused fights and stampedes.

If they believe people arriving are not spring break crowds, perhaps official school identifications should be requested.

Happens every year but after this past year of locking all these kids up and not permitting them to gather and socialize, what can you expect.

I didn't see that thread and didn't participate in it. If the mods want to do away with it, I'm sure they will. I honestly didn't know.

I don't know anything about the first one so, I can't say what took it off track. I just saw this story on my aol feed. First I'm hearing about spring break crowd down there for this year.

Why would this political? Nothing political about trying to keep the peace from rabble rousers....

It states in the article that these are NOT typical college-age crowds. Can't blame the mayhem (at least not most of it,) on the kids. Very disturbing also is the fact that so many people are brandishing FIREARMS. Cause for concern, wouldn't you agree?

That's why I said they should require an official school I.D. at a checkpoint @maximillian . They are probably outliers trying to take advantage.

The spring breakers are heading north to Ft. Lauderdale because of the Miami curfew. There are so many elderly in South Florida and the vaccine rollout hasn't gone as planned.

From everything I have seen and read I don't believe the majority are college kids, especially with firearms. Spring break has been going on for years, yes they party and get drunk, smoke weed, drive residents nuts but no firearms and blatant breaking of the law to the extent SWAT has to be called in. I have kids that went to spring break in the past and had fun, but I sure wouldn't let them go now.

I can't find any indication that your thread existed @Mindy D . It was obviously a "poof" instead of close/lock and move.

Even after others advised me that there was thread similar that got out of hand, I scrolled back and I find nothing. Nada, zilch. I hope this one doesn't go off the rails. We need to just be able to have discussions without a lot of the usual silliness.
