Microwave recs, plz. Have you bought a microwave in the last two years? Is it still working?

My trusty, 21 year old microwave died tonight. Need a new one ASAP. My friend has bought three within the last two years, usually from Brandsmart. Two have died and one las lasted for six months so far. I'd appreciate recommendations. I prefer white, but I'll take other color. I prefer 1100 watts.

I know there are many great microwaves that lasted for years, but microwaves in the past five years seem to break very quickly.

OOPS, I should have said that I need a countertop model.

I have had no issue from Best Buy.

Manufacturers give you a 1 year warranty.

I have been happy with my Panasonic. Did a lot of research before buying it. I don't remember how long it's been, but at least 10 years because we bought my father a lesser model for Christmas in 2012. He needed a simpler one and we were happy with the one we had bought so went with something similar.

@Mindy D ~ I purchased the Sharp Carousel 1100w two years ago from Best Buy, just a bit over $100. I love it, and use it throughout the day, everyday. My previous one was a Panasonic

1100w, that one lasted just about a year. Sharp has my vote, as I have owned their appliances, (microwave, TV) for many years and never had a problem with them.

I am passing along what I was told by an appliance salesperson. She had no reason to fib as I walked into the appliance store, which I have been in before, and did not make a decision yet. She told me it really does not matter which brand you choose, as they are all made in the same factories in China.

I had an expensive microwave and it died in 1 year. I bought a cheaper Farberware microwave 6 months ago (1100 watts) and it does a better job than the prior expensive microwave.

Amana. Made in the USA (mine is). My Amana is 35 yo. Back then they made high-watt ovens. Mine is 1500W which is still high by today's standards. I will buy another Amana if or when this one dies.

@QVCkitty1 @Did you buy the 1100 Watt model or the 1200 Watt model? The 1100 Watt model came out in 2017 and some reviewers say that if cooking in it for many minutes, it can overheat itself, so it turns itself off for a minute and then turns itself back on to finish cooking. The 1200 Watt model does not have any users claiming this. I think the higher watt model came out in 2020. @QVCkitty1

@SilleeMee @Pray your long serving, dependable old model continues to work. You don't want to read how often models from every brand konk out in under a year or two. I'd rather pay $400-$600 for a model that is going to give me 7-10 years of use. The Breville, the most expensive model I looked at costs $$$$. It's beautiful to look at but it also konks out and has problems with the door closure. Amana appliances are now owned by Whirlpool.

The fancier the appliance is, the more that can go wrong with it. I say get the simplest cheapest one that meets your basic requirements, and from a well known brand.

So your wattage and whether there's a carousel etc. If you never use something like the popcorn or thaw feature or if you always use it would determine whether you would require it. I say don't be afraid to go cheap if the reviews are really good.

Sharp is my brand of choice for microwaves.

My first one I had for over 18 years. Gave it away (still worked just as well) because I wanted a newer one. That newer one, also a Sharp, worked great for another 18 years but then something happened. Replaced it with another Sharp and that was over 10 years ago (not sure how long ago) and it is still working as good as new.

If I had to buy again I'd probably stick with Sharp,

@Porcelain @When it comes to microwaves, brands that lasted for years in the past, last for a couple of years today, if you're lucky.

Amana made the first microwave oven...called it a 'Radarange'. Then they upgraded the control dial to a digital touchpad and renamed it the 'Touchmatic' which is the one I own.
