Mama Wick, your photos are so realistic and the details of the deer amazing. I never saw close ups of their hooves !!! These are photos which should be featured in nature magazines or books as I have said, such lovely animals and it is always uplifting to see your post!

Looking at those pictures, the hooves seem to change. I never wonderd this before, but can deer open and close their hooves like toes? I thought they were sort of fixed like a horse's hoof. Picture two looks kind of like the deer has spread her hoof apart more like the toes on a foot or paw.

@Porcelain Yes...the hooves open and close. I believe that may help them balance.

A doe delivered 2 fawns today in the forested area behind our home. I was worried when she crouched down on her hind legs that they were damaged in some way, but she was just positioning herself for the births. It was truly a beautiful sight, and the fawns came out just as they should. They were up on their legs soon after with Mama nursing and keeping watch. I found myself tearing up at the wonder of what I had seen. It will be such a gift to hopefully see these little ones frolic in our woods in the future.
