Social Media and the Covid Vaccine

I have seen a number of posts on Facebook in the last weeks of smiling people holding their vaccine cards and advising that they were fortunate enough to receive a first or second dose of the vaccine.

It seems that some here have started/participated in threads about the same thing.

I understand that people are thrilled they were able to do this; however, where I am, it is very difficult right now to even get an appointment anywhere. Our county is getting very little vaccine for the amount of people who are in need.

My question: do you think, knowing of the scarcity of vaccine, it is thoughtless and inconsiderate for those on social media platforms to share their success when so many are in need and desperate to get the vaccine?

I am just not understanding the motivation of those who do. Perhaps I am missing something.

What say you?

I'm sorry you can't get the vaccine. People are happy they got theirs so they post that. I don't think it is inconsiderate to post about it. I don't find it an exciting thing to post about but people should not contain their happiness until everyone is happy.

Some people in local and national media are strongly advising AGAINST posting a photo of your vaccination card.

There are some who are able to take a photo and steal a person's identity.

No way would I share anything personal on social media.

I think they're celebrating a wonderful thing and encouraging others to sign up.

It's not as if Moderna and Pfizer etc stopped producing the vaccine. More is being made right now and there will be more and more available over time.

The Facebook posters are also showing that they got their shot and didn't grow a second head or have a horrible side effect. The more anecdotal proof like that, the more comfortable many of us will be. We can see what did or did not happen to the people who went before us.

I think they are just happy. My vaccine has been postponed a couple of times because supply problems. I hopefully will get the first one next Tuesday. It won't change my life - I will still wear masks and follow the rules.

@Mersha, I can see both sides.

But for the most part, I love seeing the information about people receiving vaccines. I usually woot, woot because I am thrilled that they have been able to receive a vaccine. And sharing that information is a way of letting people know that there are many out there that have received a vaccine and it should give hope to many that their time is coming. Although some will always be pessimistic no matter what, many are glad to see that some are getting through the vaccine.

It also helps dispel some of the gross misinformation about the vaccine out there. I can't believe at times what I have seen on Facebook claiming that the vaccine is causing the majority of people to die, etc. But when you see all kinds of people reporting having had the vaccine, it helps put things into perspective & puts a damper on a lot of that misinformation.

I think in the weeks to come, there will be more availability of the vaccine and there's a new vaccine coming out. A single dose that only requires regular refrigeration. That will be a big plus. I think it's ok if people post about receiving their vaccine online. What I don't like are the people hop over others or use their connections and privilege to get the vaccine and then go on social media and brag about it. They claim that they were offered "extra doses" but that's not true. The wealthy, the privileged, the connected people always get special treatment. And that is what is happening with the vaccine, it's just selfish and cruel when they brag about it.

I have read that and in terms of Facebook, I just have to laugh. If they are reading it on Facebook, those people already have access to your name, picture, and birthdate. So there isn't any information on that certificate that people on Facebook don't already know about the person.

I can't speak for Twitter, Instagram, etc., since I don't do Twitter or Instagram. They may be totally different as to the information people have about you on those social media platforms.

@Mersha I would not post a picture of my vaccine card but I see nothing wrong in sharing that you got the vaccine. No one is trying to make others who haven't gotten it feel bad. I think it's a celebration that they got it . As well as an encouragement to others to hang in there your turn is coming.

Also everyone stating their experiences with side affects may calm some who are apprehensive about taking it.

Every week more & more vaccines are becoming available. Hang in there yours is coming.

Please do not take it personally.

There is still a very large % that are choosing to not getting this vaccine the gov and media are trying to create a buzz.

They are asking people to post on social media to create "vaccine envy" so that people will fear that they are missing out and get the vaccine.

PS- I did not create the term Vaccine Envy that is the marketing campaign.

Honestly, people are beginning to take things much to personally no matter what it is🤷‍♀️

Every place in the country is experiencing shortages so I assume "no harm done" to show excitement about receiving it for those who chose to get vaccinated.

I mean my God Lady Gaga's dogs were kidnapped every media & social media outlet on fire but what about the poor dog walker only mentioned once.

@NicksmomESQ Fortunately, I have had my first vaccine and go for the second in 2 weeks but so many I know are really scrambling for the shot.

I'm not sure I know the answer to your question. Could it be an expression of their relief at no longer having to search and wait for a dose? Maybe the frustration people are feeling while waiting gets so intense that they need an outlet for the expression of their relief? Just my thoughts.

I'm in the same boat, living in a county and a state that are both floundering badly, with nothing moving particularly expeditiously if at all. I don't think it's necessarily thoughtless or inconsiderate of others to post that they got their shot or shots. I do, however, find it a bit idiotic, just as I find it so when they post pictures of what they had for brunch and so on... Posting ideas, opinions, thoughts, suggestions, etc. are, to me, reasonable. Posting what amounts to personal trivia, well, not so much.

As for the politicos and media wanting to create a buzz, before doing so, before assessing they need a marketing campaign and to create 'vaccine envy', which is just ludicrous, they should make sure they have the supply to back it up. They don't. It makes no sense to create more demand when existing demand can't be met. To me, this has been a colossal mess, with Big Brother apparently content to see the have nots jump through endless hoops to get the vaccine.

For awhile I was unable to get an appointment to get a vaccine. My girlfriend and sister did get appointments and knew I was having problems doing the same. Therefore they were hesitant to tell me about their vaccines because they felt bad I couldn't get an appointment. This was told to me after I finally was scheduled. While I understood I assured both I wouldn't have ever be upset or annoyed because they were able to get appointments. They should know me better. I want everyone to be vaccinated so we can move forward, the more the better.

I am not a Facebook person but wouldn't take offence at those who inform others they have their vaccines. Of course as other posters said,I would never put any personal information on social media,

More and more vaccines are coming, Johnson and Johnson should be available very soon. Everyone will be vaccinated, at least those who want a vaccination, that one I'll leave alone.

I'm not on Facebook often, so haven't seen any photos of people with their vaccine cards. If they want to do this, it's easy enough to just place a thumb over the name and dob.

I have seen folks here stating they got the vaccine, and I like to see it! Even before I'd gotten my first one, I found it encouraging to see that the vaccine program was rolling along.

Actually, extra doses (where I live) are given out to people at the end of a clinic, if a vial has been opened and there are doses remaining. This has happened at the past two clinics where I've been a volunteer.

I wouldn't say the doses went to anyone wealthy or privileged. The clinic coordinator keeps a waitlist of names of people who live nearby and would be able to get to the site quickly.

If we didn't do this, they'd be discarded.

Speaking for myself, I've been glad to read the experiences of those getting the vaccines. I want to know what to expect in terms of process itself and potential side effects.

And I'd much rather read they had a vaccine than see a photo of their lunch.
