What I just saw

Since Dec., we've had close to 60"s of snow in east central PA. Most recently we got 4" on Mon. and it's been cold until yesterday when it was around 40 degrees. I looked out my front door yesterday and there was a darned mosquito on the glass. Really? Just now, I was up in my loft and my cat went jumping up in the window and there on the other side of the glass was a fly. Can't imagine how they survived in all this snow and cold.

It's so beautiful today! Just got back from a nice long, sunny walk, dodging lots of puddles & snow melt!

Sorry, @Harpa , nothing so nice. It's beautiful here today, also. It's about 53 degrees, but will cool down later in the week.

Can flies survive freezing temperatures?

Without warm, secluded shelter, flies can’t survive freezing temperatures. Most common flies can’t hibernate, either, which means they need a shelter where they can access food. If you have flies, it means your home provides both of these things.

That's funny because we had a big horsefly in the house the other day - it was driving me crazy! Where did he come from?!? Our robins never leave -- I didn't see them when it was 15-below, but they are visible again now. Yesterday, Mr. and Mrs. Cardinal were back at the feeder. I always worry about our birds when it's cold.

I don't understand it either.

We had snow on the ground all last week, about 7 inches of it and record breaking low temperatures. I went for a walk around the back of my property two days after it melted and got bit by a fire ant on my ankle.

@catter70 Are you sure they were not frozen to the glass?

I've seen a dead critter once in a while stuck to a glass pane.

Odd for it to be out though, I would think, frozen or not.

@Cakers3 , they weren't frozen because they were moving around. Besides they would have had to been there for a long while and I would have noticed them long before this.

Yeah, a darn fly outside on the screen while I was doing dishes. I looked outside and yes, still snow on the ground. LOL. Where'd that darn fly come from?

We're in the cold Northeast too and I have recently found a couple of live stinkbugs in our house. Picked up those suckers and flushed them down the toilet.

@Harpa Oddly enough, our Robins never left this winter. We have a fun family competition of who sees the first Robin in their yard each spring. We noticed Robins all winter and we had quite a bit of snow, as well. Kind of odd.

I also live in the NE and have been shoveling snow on and off for the past few weeks. Because of the warmer temps the last 2 days - most of it has melted.

A few days ago, after coming in from shoveling snow - a flying insect whizzed by inside the house as I was washing my hands.

I thought - really? grrrr

if I'm shoveling snow outside - dont wanna see no flying critters inside the house

I see Robins in the winter. Some of them stay around all year around. Some Robins migrate, some don't. In winter most robins tend to be nomatic. Just move around a lot, but not staying in one place long. So there really isn't the first robin of spring. More of the second robin of spring.

Some insects, including mosquitoes and house flies, can survive freezing temps outside for two days exposed. Inside they can just hibernate then come back to life once it gets warm enough, usually warmer than 50'.
