Selling Items On Facebook Marketplace

So my mother passed away last year, because of COVID my sister and I are only now getting around to clearing everything out of her house (it is an overwhelming task). My sister and I aren't familiar about how it works so my nephew put up one item for us just to get an idea. It is a nice dinning table and six chairs (I believe there is also a leaf for the table). We're asking $100 for it, it was gently used we only ate at the table if we had company. But OMG you would think they're buying a thousand dollar set, they're asking so many questions, you've seen the pictures, you like it or you don't. I told my sister to take it down, it's a lot of trouble for $50 each I rather donate it.

If it's a solid wood set, you're probably not asking enough to make it worthwhile.

Have you thought of using an auction company? They will pick up everything from her house. Usually they require a 20% payment for everything that is sold.

We flip houses and do a lot of buying on Marketplace. Of course we have to ask questions and if I don't get answers, I don't buy. Some sellers won't even put measurements so of course you have to ask for measurements. There are also a lot of new stuff there. I have bought vanities, decorative doors and lighting. Anything that is fit for the houses.

Marketplace isn't for you, since you feel this way. People make a living doing this and I usually stick with the Sellers I'm used to.

@Foxxee My brother-in-law mentioned something, I forgot the name, something like MaxSold? Anyway they wanted like $700 for doing it and like 30% of the sales. This seemed like an awful lot of money to me.

@Jordan2 buyers would be wondering why the table set is only $100. That's why they want more information. A better description would bring more buyers. A table like you mentioned that was hardly used should go for more, especially if it's solid oak or whatever.

@Jordan2 I feel your pain. My mom passed last August, but not of Covid. Though she lived only two miles from me, I could not visit her due to restrictions on visitors. The last time I saw her in person was on July 9 (when I visited her in her dentist's waiting room) and she passed on August 20 in the assisted living center.

Anyway, my sister and I have already dealt with a lot of her belongings, most of which ended up in my garage. Yesterday we went though her towels and my kitchen counters are currently filled with all her towels as I decide what to keep and what to donate. I have kept a LOT of her things, which is not really a good thing. My sister has a much easier time of getting rid of things.

I agree with others that you may be asking too little for the table and chairs. It can be a real pain though. If it gets to be too bothersome and you don't really need the money, I would just donate it.

I continue to recommend MaxSold. Easier for you and you WILL make more $ than you would by selling through other means. Please look into it.

Yes, of course they charge. They do a LOT of work. Safer and better than a traditional estate sale, too.

Usually the seller would delivery for a small fee according to the distance or there would be a pick up point. Just got a 5 month old electric stove because the wife didn't like it. I had it delivered for $20.

For those with a store, we go to the store.

I suppose it depends on where you live. In my area there is no charge for pickup. Just 20% for everything that is sold.

@Jordan2 My in-laws just made the decision to sell their condo and move into a fully furnished assisted living apartment.

No one, not even the buyer of the condo wanted to buy any of the furniture. They ended up having to call the equivilant of 1800gotjunk to get rid of everything.

In our Denver area it is usually 40% for the estate sale / auction company and sometimes an even higher up front fee.

I sell on FB Marketplace. I don't have people come to my home for large items

like a table and chairs set.

I have sent a few items through the mail and met to sell with someone else

with me of course many times.

It is alot of work. I take enough photos and give great descriptions and I do

sometimes reduce the price after a while. Everything I sell is neat and clean.

You should see some of the photos of things that people try to sell. It is

crazy. Example, large garbage bags of clothes and you don't even see the

clothes, just the bags in the photos! Old beat up junk that should be in a

dumpster.

I would definitely knocked the price down from $175 to maybe $150 and then

gave it some time. Not everything will sell immediately, give it a short time

but it would be worth it.

You would think the picture(s) would be sufficient. I guess not. I usually have

more of a problem trying to set up a meeting time/place with my buyer(s).

I started using FB marketplace very frustrating -- I'd put full description, pick up location, etc. and get a zillion question but never sold much. The last straw was a lady wanted my sets of Temptations -- we agreed on a price & place to meet.

Got there and wanted better price I wasn't lowering price more..so they didn't want the pieces. Two hours of wasted time (they were 30 minutes late at pickup location).

I may try again but more cautiously🤔

Now I'm looking for various pieces of furniture -- no description, no dimensions, etc. yes nice picture. I ask seller questions no reply.

And sometimes I can't find the piece (posting) I just looked at awhile ago. -- and that is frustrating. Or message seller no replies so I guess that means "sold".

At this point, I agree just donate it

@Jordan2 Here there are estate sales. A company comes to the house of the deceased or wherever the items are, tags everything, and asks for a percentage of the sales. I plan to have this done, mentioned in my Will, when I pass so that DD doesn't have to deal with so much. She takes what she wants, and leaves the rest for sale.

When m,y Mother passed, I took what I wanted, and donated the rest as she didn't have much of value, and not a lot of furniture, I took what I could use.
